What We Think

What We Think: More than a resolution

With the start of a new decade upon us, it is time to finally realize that recurring resolution to get fit and healthy.

The Valdosta-Lowndes County Family YMCA kicks off Team Lean, a 10-week community-wide weight-loss competition for men and women 13 years old and up on Saturday.

Team Lean is open to YMCA members and also to non-members.

Competitors can register as part of a team of four or five or as an individual. The cost to do so is $50 per person, payable at registration or $10 a week for the first five weeks.

Team Lean weigh-ins will be held every Thursday at either the YMCA at 2424 Gornto Road or South Georgia Medical Center, who, along with Pepsi, is sponsoring the event. The final weigh-in will be on Thursday, March 18.

Cash prizes will be awarded to winning teams, as well as individuals.

Team Lean organizers hope the community loses a combined 10,000 pounds.

The best ways to become a weight-loss winner are to eat fewer calories, more whole grains and fresh fruits and vegetables, get plenty of sleep and move more. Of course, those are good recommendations even if you are already slim and trim.

According to the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, Americans of all ages are urged to make being active part of their everyday lives.

Kids are encouraged to jump rope or play a game of catch or race a friend.

Teens are encouraged to shoot some hoops, grab a skateboard, practice karate or go for a jog.

Adults are encouraged to find some activity they enjoy doing and do it for at least 30 minutes a day at least five days a week.

This can be something as simple as taking a brisk walk after dinner.

“There is a fountain of youth,” the Council states. “Millions have discovered it. The secret to feeling better and living longer. It's called staying active. All it takes is finding a program that works for you and sticking with it.”

  • Parents and schools

There is a lot of talk lately about school systems and grading policies, and how all of a child's problems come back to a lack of parenting. But is it really that simple? Can it be a case where the school systems are so focused on the problem few that the majority of students are ignored?

  • Thumbs up, thumbs down

THUMBS UP: To Brooks County High School engineering and technology teacher Don Morgan and his students. They recently received national attention for their work with biodiesel fuel. They collect used cooking oil from area fast-food restaurants then process this oil into biodiesel. Morgan hopes to next interest the Brooks County school buses into running on the fuel created in his class. This classroom not only prepares students for the future but may prepare all of us for an alternative energy source.

  • Just the facts, please

The Times has taken some hits this weekend following the reporting of the Rev. Floyd Rose’ rally on Saturday concerning the car which drove into a home, killing an infant on New Year’s, and an incident at Pinevale Learning Center. Some police officers think the VDT is not being fair, and Rose accused the VDT of not printing the facts, but the facts are as follows:

It began as a small gathering for fathers and daughters. It has become one of Valdosta’s most popular social events of the year.
Several years ago, Jeff Stewart co-founded the event with his wife, Becky, as a way for him to give a special night to his two daughters. Other fathers of First Presbyterian Church liked the idea and the Father-Daughter Valentine Dance was born.

  • Sports tourneys: They will come

More than 20 years after its release, “Field of Dreams’” mantra, “If you build it, they will come,” has possibly become one of the most overused lines from any movie. Yet, it seems all too fitting for what’s been happening lately within the Valdosta-Lowndes County Parks and Recreation Authority.
