Love may be in the air, but don’t expect anything for Valentine’s Day. At least not, if our recent valdostadailytimes.com poll is any indication.
With 339 votes cast this past weekend, 56.93 percent responded they didn’t plan to buy their honey anything this year.
Ouch.
A lot of fellas are going to find themselves in the dog house if that number is true — assuming it was men who voted in the poll.
Meanwhile, 10.91 percent planned to give flowers to their honey; 14.45 percent chocolate; 6.78 percent jewelry; 3.24 percent lingerie; and a generous 7.67 percent plan to buy their honey all of the above.
Still, 56.93 percent plan to buy nothing. Perhaps, they don’t plan on buying anything because they already consider themselves the perfect gift to a romantic partner. Well, they will live and learn.
Of course, maybe the key word is “plan.”
Many men don’t plan anything in advance for Valentine’s Day.
There’s a rush on jewelry stores, flower shops, and other shops on Valentine’s Day.
Some men rush into grocery stores that sell candy, cards and flowers and make a general sweep of the aisles, making the entire Valentine purchase within a matter of minutes. The longest part of these stops isn’t selecting the items. It’s standing in line behind all of the other men doing the same thing.
So, don’t worry, true romantics.
That 56.93 percent is probably more grumble than actuality. A lot of folks don’t want to fork out money for Valentine’s Day, but they will. You’d be surprised at some of the folks you’ll find in a grocery store line holding a bouquet of flowers.
Of course, many men may be thinking that 56.93 percent number comes from the opposite sex. Many men, after all, have come to expect nothing on Valentine’s Day.

THUMBS UP: To Brooks County High School engineering and technology teacher Don Morgan and his students. They recently received national attention for their work with biodiesel fuel. They collect used cooking oil from area fast-food restaurants then process this oil into biodiesel. Morgan hopes to next interest the Brooks County school buses into running on the fuel created in his class. This classroom not only prepares students for the future but may prepare all of us for an alternative energy source.
