For numerologists, astrologists, psychics, and others who are fascinated with the importance of dates and numbers, today is 12/12/12.
News reports of couples flocking to get marriage certificates in time to wed on this auspicious day report that the most often cited reason is that it’s a date neither groom nor bride is likely to forget.
While some may see a spiritual element in today’s date, others consider the day to be just another Wednesday. Whichever category you may fall in, one event today will make this a special date for thousands of victims of Hurricane Sandy.
The 12-12-12 Concert for Sandy Relief is slated to be the largest event in music history and will benefit the Robin Hood Relief Fund, which is funneling all donations to the Sandy relief efforts in the Northeast.
Touted as a global event, the concert will be broadcast on television, online streaming through YouTube, Hulu, and others, and on satellite radio. The musical lineup includes Bon Jovi, Eric Clapton, Billy Joel, Dave Grohl, Alicia Keys, The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Kanye West, Eddie Vedder, The Who, Paul McCartney and more, playing live or via satellite at New York’s Madison Square Gardens beginning at 7:30 p.m. today.
Donations will be accepted throughout the concert, which will benefit food banks, housing services and other charitable organizations in the New York, New Jersey and Connecticut areas devastated by the storm.
So while 12/12/12 may or may not be of importance to you for its numerical alignment, the concert tonight is of tremendous importance to those who lost homes, cars, businesses, and loved ones in Hurricane Sandy. Consider tuning in and donating if you can to help those in need.

Thoughts on graduation
Graduation ceremonies reflect how life marches on. For the students receiving their diplomas and degrees, graduation is a culmination of the majority of their lives’ work.

Thumbs up, thumbs down
THUMBS UP: To Dr. John Gaston, retiring dean of Valdosta State University’s College of the Arts. For the past 10-plus years, Gaston has worked to build a more interconnected program with various artistic and communications departments working together. Given that you are likely to see one College of the Arts department collaborating with another during events is proof of Gaston’s success.

Happy Mother’s Day!
A few years ago, a television commercial asked, Who first believed in you? Many folks may have instinctively answered by simply saying, Mom.

Thumbs up
THUMBS UP: To mail workers, volunteers and food bank staff for gathering food for the annual Stamp Out Hunger postal food drive today. A plastic bag designated for canned goods and other non-perishable food items should have arrived in your mailbox earlier this week. If you haven’t already, take a few moments to fill the bag with food and hang from your mailbox. If you didn’t receive the special Stamp Out Hunger bag, any plastic bag filled with food will do. This food drive helps feed thousands of South Georgians annually. Valdosta-Lowndes County often donates more food than nearly all other cities and counties in Georgia.

Celebrating nurses
She is considered the founder of modern nursing so it seems only natural that National Nurses Week would include Florence Nightingale’s birthday.
