VALDOSTA —
More than two thirds of the counties in Georgia were on extreme heat alerts Monday as temperatures rose to the high 90s with a heat index well over 100 degrees.
The alerts are primarily for the afternoon hours, when the combination of humidity and temperature was expected to push the heat index over 110 degrees. It doesn’t matter how fit you are, your body needs water and electrolytes to sustain any type of outdoor physical activity at this time. If you must be outdoors, alternate between water and Gatorade to ensure that you are hydrated well enough, but even then, if you begin to feel faint, stop what you’re doing and rest.
The following tips might be helpful to withstand the heat for the next several days:
• Consider walking or exercising indoors;
• Walk pets or do yard work before 10 a.m. or after 6 p.m.;
• Watch not only your own fluid intake, but that of your children as well. Just because a child is outside in a pool doesn’t mean they are cool enough. Ice water, popsicles, Gatorade and fruit with a high water content, such as watermelon, should help keep your child hydrated while they’re outside playing;
• If you must be outside for a prolonged period, rest in a shaded area as often as you can.
Don’t forget your pets, as they need shade and lots of water on these hot days, and check on any elderly friends or relatives you have who may need a helping hand in this heat.
Heat-related illness can strike anyone at any age, regardless of physical conditioning. Just because it’s always hot this time of year is no reason to do something dangerous or foolish.
Mathis Auditorium is open Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., for use by those who need to be in an air conditioned environment during the heat of the day. Call (229) 259-3548 for more information.
