Rant & Raves for Wednesday, January 23, 2013

VALDOSTA — Since Wednesday is a day to rave, I would like to rave about two ladies who deal with the public and go way beyond their job. Lindsey at the Water Department and Shay at the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Department. These ladies do a fine job. Thanks to both of you. Your help was greatly appreciated.

Rave to Valdosta School of Ballet’s “Cinderella” ballet performance with VSU’s Theatre and Dance Department: What a treat! This was truly a magical and enchanting performance! Thank you!

Praise to The Valdosta Symphony’s Guild’s Tunes for Tots — thank you to all the amazing musicians for such an opportunity! This was not just for tots but a great experience for adults, too! It was so neat to see VSO Music Director Howard Hsu, Concertmaster Nina Lutz and other amazing professionals take the stage with the children in beautiful performances!

Kudos to Theatre Guild Valdosta’s production of “The Trip to Bountiful” — what an awesome and moving performance by the entire cast especially Joanne Griner! Way to go!

Really enjoyed the article on Eames Yates. It was very interesting and we are lucky to have him in our area.

A huge rave to Dave and all the crew at Miller’s Hardware, downtown. Dave took my plumbing problem as if it were his own and fixed it far more simply than what I had in mind, saving me a lot of money. No one provides better service!

Simba was our cashier at Target the other night, and I just wanted to commend him for being great at his job. He was so friendly to me and my little boy. Great seeing someone with such a good personality. Simba, you’re going to go far in this life! Keep up your awesome work.

Thank you to SGMC for sending a refund check to my elderly parents. They overpaid for a hospital stay, and SGMC sent them a refund check in the mail. Honesty and integrity noted. Thank you so much.

To the person that found my wife’s wallet and returned via the USPS fully intact, thank you. It is nice to know there are still such decent people in our crumbling world.

Nine of us ate at Heidi’s today. Great food. Let’s support businesses in that area of Hill Avenue during the overpass construction! Use Savannah Avenue, or I used River Street.

Over 150 applicants applied for the handful of teaching jobs in Lowndes County. Plus, almost every single paraprofessional is a certified teacher who has been waiting patiently, “doing their time.” And, Lake Park Elementary hires a teacher who has quit, not once, but twice before. The "good ole' boy" network at its finest.

Have we progressed to the point where we are arguing about gay marriage? I thought the South was still outraged about blacks being able to marry whites! Hmm...We will catch up to the rest of the world eventually.

I found the cartoon referencing Tim Tebow's Christianity on Thursday's editorial page very offensive. I can agree that many people are out for what God can do for them, not how they can serve God, But I do not see any evidence of that attitude or life style in Tim Tebow's life. Time will tell.

Good riddance to the doctor unable to take Medicaid patients?! Do you work for free? I bet you go to work and expect a paycheck. Why would the doctor be any different? Blame our fearless leaders, not the doctors. And you are WAY out of line questioning whether that person is Christian or not. Sounds like the person who thinks preachers should work for free.

Amazing: Even a judgmental person like yourself can’t even bother to get the facts straight before you criticize something. Jason Collins did an extremely brave thing by coming out in a world filled with people such as yourself. Words of Wisdom: Leave the judging to God.

Raves to Mrs. Kay and Mrs. Sylvia at Cook Primary! They have the best behaved class and are the best teachers in that school!

To all who use Coleman Road as a short cut between Old Highway 41 North and North Valdosta Road, please remember the speed limit is 35, not 65. Tailgating me isn’t going to make me go faster. Remember, it’s our neighborhoods, not your short cut!

I hope Al Sharpton finds time to visit the mother in Brunswick whose baby was shot point blank in the forehead while in his baby stroller. Perhaps the reverend could also counsel the angry young black man who pulled the trigger. Oh wait, the baby was white. Never mind.

I thought that all schools had dress codes that the teachers and substitutes had to follow? When I walk into the school it looks like they are headed to the pool instead of the classroom. Tank tops and skimpy skirts are not allowed. Come on, administration, make them follow the rules. Thank you, to the teachers and staff that do adhere to the dress code.

Property tax should be based on value. School taxes should be separate and assessed to each household equally, no exemptions. The rich, middle and poor should pay equally for children's public education.
