Rant & Rave for Thursday, July 5, 2012

- — The health care bill is not a good thing at all. People who do not understand it now will find out that it's a terrible thing. Many doctors will be leaving their practices because they are not going to be told by the government  how they should treat their patients. Plus, once this goes into full effect, your patient records become part of the government.

I totally agree we have a moral obligation to help others whenever possible. However, our federal government has no right to tax us out of house and home to do it. When our federal government shows some fiscal responsibility and cuts their spending like the rest of us, then we might turn this sinking ship around.

Why does Lowndes County charge me an additional 2.2 percent plus 50 cents, to pay for my tag with my debit card, but nothing to pay by check. A check costs more to process and takes time to credit, whereas a direct debit instantly transfers the cash from my account to theirs. Makes no sense.

Yes, only in America can we have one black president in history, and allow him to be openly disrespected simply because of his race. Only in the U.S. can 1 percent rule, and make the laws that the other 99 percent blindly follow.

Everyone, please read O.C.G.A. §40-6-6 (emphasis on part (e)) Official Code of Georgia, pertaining to use of emergency vehicles and when and how they are allowed to disregard, to an extent, the laws of the road. Very interesting.

Voting locations, train stations, ambulances and towing costs. Who gives a rip? Let’s talk about a real travesty — what has happened to the Lowndes County Softball Program? Why was the softball coach forced to resign? He had done nothing but great things since taking over the program.

It is a sad day in our town when someone destroys a public art project that the community (children and adults) built for the enjoyment of all.

If the owner really wanted to sell the Remerton Mill, you would think the grass would be mowed so that a buyer could actually read his contact number on the ‘for sale’ sign.

The problem with inconsistent traffic flow is people not paying attention to their driving and poor planning on the part of the city, neither of which can be fixed by T-SPLOST!

I'm proud that your son with a pre-existing condition can now get insurance. So glad I get to pay for that for him.

I am a student at Valdosta State University, I pay thousands of dollars in tuition, but I am not allowed to use the Student Recreation Center because I am not taking summer classes. I was told that I have to pay $45 to use the Rec Center during the summer. As if I don't pay enough already... Utterly ridiculous.

Truly embarrassing that our community euthanizes 12 animals daily. Our citizenry hasn’t progressed to understand responsibility. The end result in these horrible economic times is the ongoing suffering of animals. Other locales nearby have solved this problem; mandatory spay/neuter and breeding licenses are needed to stop this scourge. Let’s get serious, please!

I think what the County Commissioners  are doing to Deep South Sanitation is outrageous and I think the citizens of Lowndes County should remember this during the next election. They are giving away freedom of choice. This man had this trash collection before Advanced.

The City of Valdosta needs another cable company! Competition is a great thing.

Perhaps I'm in the minority, but I'm quite pleased with Advanced Disposal. I'm paying less than I paid for service with Veolia, the service is reliable and they offer a large recycling bin. I don't understand what's "socialist" about offering county residents affordable, reliable service.

Closing the trash drop off was a big mistake. I live in Stone Creek so now I can’t put anything beside the street, now I have to haul it to the landfill and pay by weight. I had to pay $15, then I have to pay the trash pick up monthly. Something is wrong in this picture. I have a lot of yard waste, so now I have to take it to the landfill every time I clean yards.

I live in Brooks County. A while back, a limb fell at the edge of my yard. I called the road department asking to remove it. I was told they could not help because it was on private property. Later driving down Johnson Short Road, I saw the road department removing limbs from a yard. I have found out the limbs were on private property.

Do people in Valdosta not understand that when you lag behind at a green light there are people behind you that will not make the green light due to your inconsideration?

Mosquitoes in the city are growing fast. But sanitation and cable bills in so-called "Metro Valdosta" are growing even faster!

We live in Stone Creek and couldn't be happier with Deep South Sanitation! They are the best. People don't realize that they come get your trash can and put it back on the side of the house! Keep fighting Deep South, and know you have our support!
