Rant & Rave for Monday, July 2, 2012

-- — As a former Facebook user, everytime I was on Facebook it amazed me at the amount of personal info Facebookers posted, and it was quite a shock to see the language that was used regularly. Many think their profiles are private, when they are not always. I think Facebook has devalued friendship and the right to privacy and will never use it again.

Today my faith in this country has somewhat been restored with the Supreme Court allowing the Health Care Act to stand. Now if we can teach the people what is really in it, and forget all the lies that have been told, we will really have something to be proud of.

I am offering myself to the VDT as a proof reader for the classified ads. I understand that some are entered by individuals  online, but they sorely need to be corrected before printing. I read them every morning in place of the Comics section. They are funnier.

A train station? Instead, let's have a nuclear power plant. The Mayor and City Council should get right on it. Let's put in Rant & Raves each week until we get one.

Only in America could people claim that the government still discriminates against blacks in America when we have a black President, a black Attorney General and roughly 18 percent of the federal workforce is black while 12 percent of the population is black.

I agree with Mr. Marks: we have an obligation to help other human beings. However, it is a moral obligation. If forced upon us, it’s a tax.

A big rave to Jack Pruden. T-SPLOST is absolutely essential to our future.

Why are the property owners on the corner of Cherry Creek Road and Lake Laurie not required to mow the field? Just because their development did not get approval, shouldn't mean they have no obligation to maintain the property. The city should enforce the codes on mowing.

Thanks to the neighbor on Coppage Road for taking the time to scrape the road. Too bad the county has failed to keep their promise of paving. Wish the elected officials had to travel this road every day. Something would be done then!

I will drive any number of miles to vote. Quit whining!

Personally, I do not care where I have to go to vote. Just as long as my vote is counted and heard and that my vote helps to vote Obama out of the White House. God bless the U.S.A.

Maybe that family just wanted to enjoy a nice day at the park without being harassed by a church group? They knock on your doors, call your houses, and hand out “tracts” at the mall. That might have been the parents only day off to spend with their family. Can’t you guys just give everyone some space to breathe?

Thank you to Victoria at Winn-Dixie in Lake Park for  being honest. I left my cash back in the automatic check out. She found it, and turned it in. Great employee. Keep her Winn-Dixie.

I am a student at Valdosta State University, I pay thousands of dollars in tuition, but I am not allowed to use the Student Recreation Center because I am not taking summer classes. I was told that I have to pay $45 to use the Rec Center during the summer. As if I don't pay enough already... Utterly ridiculous.

Truly embarrassing that our community euthanizes 12 animals daily. Our citizenry hasn’t progressed to understand responsibility. The end result in these horrible economic times is the ongoing suffering of animals. Other locales nearby have solved this problem; mandatory spay/neuter and breeding licenses are needed to stop this scourge. Let’s get serious, please!

I think what the County Commissioners  are doing to Deep South Sanitation is outrageous and I think the citizens of Lowndes County should remember this during the next election. They are giving away freedom of choice. This man had this trash collection before Advanced.

The City of Valdosta needs another cable company! Competition is a great thing.

Perhaps I'm in the minority, but I'm quite pleased with Advanced Disposal. I'm paying less than I paid for service with Veolia, the service is reliable and they offer a large recycling bin. I don't understand what's "socialist" about offering county residents affordable, reliable service.

Closing the trash drop off was a big mistake. I live in Stone Creek so now I can’t put anything beside the street, now I have to haul it to the landfill and pay by weight. I had to pay $15, then I have to pay the trash pick up monthly. Something is wrong in this picture. I have a lot of yard waste, so now I have to take it to the landfill every time I clean yards.

I live in Brooks County. A while back, a limb fell at the edge of my yard. I called the road department asking to remove it. I was told they could not help because it was on private property. Later driving down Johnson Short Road, I saw the road department removing limbs from a yard. I have found out the limbs were on private property.

Do people in Valdosta not understand that when you lag behind at a green light there are people behind you that will not make the green light due to your inconsideration?
