Rant and Raves for Thursday, May 3, 2012

VALDOSTA — I am sick of ignorant people ranting about the welfare system who have never had to struggle to pay a bill, or had to wonder how they would feed their family. Shut your mouth until you have walked in these shoes. We work our tail off in this low-wage town.  Shut up until you can walk the walk that we do. FYI, I do not depend on the state for anything. Every poor person is not on food stamps and welfare!

Since when did it become acceptable for a school administrator to spend school hours planning a wedding and making floral arrangements? How many school receptionists get to model their wedding dresses in between answering the phone and monitoring the office? I guess Berrien is starting some new traditions for staff members.

Smart Meters have been connected to health problems, fires in older homes and pose a potential invasion of privacy. You do not have to  accept a smart meter   on your property. We aren't.

I think you can take down your "Newt 2012" signs now.

Academy Sports, on behalf of the many people around South Georgia, we would like to welcome you!

Just read the article on water restrictions in Valdosta. It's OK for my neighbor to do laundry, flush the toilet, take showers but it's not OK for me to water my garden. My garden helps feed my family. I will water my garden regardless of restrictions as long as my neighbor is allowed their water luxuries.

If the VPD would just drive through Walden Woods any night they could write tickets for cars parked on sidewalks. We send out letters all the time telling residents this is a city violation and the same ones do it all the time.

Although I've always been a happy customer of Lowndes County Utilities, I do have one small complaint. Why can we still not pay our bill online? When will the county water residents enjoy the convenience of online bill pay just as the city residents do?

Officials in Nashville must think their town is the cleanest in the state. They cancel or did not participate in the citywide clean up and their code enforcer only gave four citations in one year. Way to go!

Don’t forget today is National Prayer Day. We should all get on our knees and thank the good Lord for all the good  blessings we get each and every day.

Alright Sister's Pizza, how am I supposed to cheat on my diet if you stay closed! The other pizza places are too far from downtown for my lunch hour and are a bit too greasy.

I am thankful I chose to stick with Deep South Sanitation. Our trash is always picked up right on time and he never leaves anything behind. After all my neighbors' trash is "picked up," often items are strewn by the road and the cans are either left in the road or fallen in or beside the road. Get rid of the big company and move to Deep South, if you want true customer service!

Over 150 applicants applied for the handful of teaching jobs in Lowndes County. Plus, almost every single paraprofessional is a certified teacher who has been waiting patiently, “doing their time.” And, Lake Park Elementary hires a teacher who has quit, not once, but twice before. The "good ole' boy" network at its finest.

Have we progressed to the point where we are arguing about gay marriage? I thought the South was still outraged about blacks being able to marry whites! Hmm...We will catch up to the rest of the world eventually.

I found the cartoon referencing Tim Tebow's Christianity on Thursday's editorial page very offensive. I can agree that many people are out for what God can do for them, not how they can serve God, But I do not see any evidence of that attitude or life style in Tim Tebow's life. Time will tell.

Good riddance to the doctor unable to take Medicaid patients?! Do you work for free? I bet you go to work and expect a paycheck. Why would the doctor be any different? Blame our fearless leaders, not the doctors. And you are WAY out of line questioning whether that person is Christian or not. Sounds like the person who thinks preachers should work for free.

Amazing: Even a judgmental person like yourself can’t even bother to get the facts straight before you criticize something. Jason Collins did an extremely brave thing by coming out in a world filled with people such as yourself. Words of Wisdom: Leave the judging to God.

Raves to Mrs. Kay and Mrs. Sylvia at Cook Primary! They have the best behaved class and are the best teachers in that school!

To all who use Coleman Road as a short cut between Old Highway 41 North and North Valdosta Road, please remember the speed limit is 35, not 65. Tailgating me isn’t going to make me go faster. Remember, it’s our neighborhoods, not your short cut!

I hope Al Sharpton finds time to visit the mother in Brunswick whose baby was shot point blank in the forehead while in his baby stroller. Perhaps the reverend could also counsel the angry young black man who pulled the trigger. Oh wait, the baby was white. Never mind.
