Rant & Raves for Thursday, January 10, 2012

VALDOSTA — Thank you, President Obama, for raising the taxes on my husband's check and my check. Our income is now lower thanks to you. We will now have to get second jobs in order to survive!

Thanks to the two Valdosta police officers who pulled me over for jogging early on Baytree Road. They did the same to two other runners as I continued my run.

Instead of depending on The Valdosta Daily Times to get your information about how to obtain a driver’s license, why don't you call the DMV and get the information straight from the source?

SGMC emergency room had one doctor on duty Jan. 2 at 2:30 a.m. I waited to see a doctor for over two hours before I left and saw my regular doctor at 8 a.m. With emergency vehicles arriving and people that had higher priority, i.e., chest pain, one doctor was not able to take care of all the people. SGMC should require the company that supports the emergency room to have two doctors on duty with staff at all times.

Perhaps the waiter who complained about adults ordering from the children's menu would be more comfortable working in a restaurant where it is not permitted. The portion sizes are better, and we do expect the same service as it takes the same amount of effort either way. We leave a more than generous "adult" tip, realizing a waiter depends on tips.

Blocking websites in places of business, including hospitals, is a normal procedure. It's meant to keep employees from wasting time surfing and is difficult to separate within the business.

I sincerely hope the Lowndes County commissioners and the new chairman do not continue down the road of messing with the density requirements around Moody AFB. If they do, they are playing with fire as I believe the military would close Moody in a heartbeat during the next round of base reviews.

The BCS National Championship was nothing but a national joke. The real championship was played on Dec. 1. I will be so glad when the playoff system is put into effect. There will be times when a better team gets eliminated by a team that just played better that day but no more of this getting to the championship just because you're undefeated.

Thank you, VDT, for an all rave column on Wednesdays. It's so nice to read all the positive things people are saying. Starts my day off just right!

How long is it going to take AT&T telephone and/or Mediacom cable to do something about the vines and bushes  growing over the cable lines at Mt. Zion Church  Road  and Academy Acres. The lines are  pulled down where a 6 foot person can touch them. We won’t have any cable service or phone service if something is not done about this pretty soon.

Alright Sister's Pizza, how am I supposed to cheat on my diet if you stay closed! The other pizza places are too far from downtown for my lunch hour and are a bit too greasy.

I am thankful I chose to stick with Deep South Sanitation. Our trash is always picked up right on time and he never leaves anything behind. After all my neighbors' trash is "picked up," often items are strewn by the road and the cans are either left in the road or fallen in or beside the road. Get rid of the big company and move to Deep South, if you want true customer service!

Over 150 applicants applied for the handful of teaching jobs in Lowndes County. Plus, almost every single paraprofessional is a certified teacher who has been waiting patiently, “doing their time.” And, Lake Park Elementary hires a teacher who has quit, not once, but twice before. The "good ole' boy" network at its finest.

Have we progressed to the point where we are arguing about gay marriage? I thought the South was still outraged about blacks being able to marry whites! Hmm...We will catch up to the rest of the world eventually.

I found the cartoon referencing Tim Tebow's Christianity on Thursday's editorial page very offensive. I can agree that many people are out for what God can do for them, not how they can serve God, But I do not see any evidence of that attitude or life style in Tim Tebow's life. Time will tell.

Good riddance to the doctor unable to take Medicaid patients?! Do you work for free? I bet you go to work and expect a paycheck. Why would the doctor be any different? Blame our fearless leaders, not the doctors. And you are WAY out of line questioning whether that person is Christian or not. Sounds like the person who thinks preachers should work for free.

Amazing: Even a judgmental person like yourself can’t even bother to get the facts straight before you criticize something. Jason Collins did an extremely brave thing by coming out in a world filled with people such as yourself. Words of Wisdom: Leave the judging to God.

Raves to Mrs. Kay and Mrs. Sylvia at Cook Primary! They have the best behaved class and are the best teachers in that school!

To all who use Coleman Road as a short cut between Old Highway 41 North and North Valdosta Road, please remember the speed limit is 35, not 65. Tailgating me isn’t going to make me go faster. Remember, it’s our neighborhoods, not your short cut!
