Rant and Raves for Wednesday, October 3, 2012

VALDOSTA — School fund raisers do not pay for luncheons or T-shirts. Teachers have to buy all those T-shirts themselves. And the luncheons are covered by cheer fund money that is taken up from each faculty and staff member. Fund raisers cover paper, glue, ink cartridges, labels, books and other needed but unfunded materials. Quit complaining unless you know facts.

Motorcycles should not be passing traffic by going between cars that are side-by-side. That is dangerous.

The only solution to losing a football game is to get better and come back next year.

What, no concession stands open on the first day of Parks & Rec baseball?  At least bring the “peanut lady” back!

I pay county taxes in Cook County to have two ambulances protect my county. Why is it the ambulances we pay for can leave our county uncovered to do transports from other counties? Maybe it’s time to get our own EMS back that was here for the taxpayers. Go back to Macon MGA!

Rave to Tomlinson Auto Shop.  They were polite, nice and quick. Thank you for taking care of me and my car in a short time and very reasonable price. Thank you again.

We had to go to SGMC emergency room. We were treated in a very professional manner from start to finish. The highlight was meeting Dr. Matt Shannon. He is so caring. A follow up with Dr. David Sule was also perfect. We need more of these in Valdosta.

A huge rave to Judge Ellerbee for all he has done to make a difference in the lives of the children in Lowndes County.

We don’t really have poverty in the U.S. Even our poor people have cell phones. Is this a great country, or what?

Nomophobia is the fear of not having a mobile phone. NoBamaphobia is the fear of not having the government pay for it.

Recently at the Westside Elementary School book fair, I witnessed amazing kindness that deserves a rave. A volunteer at the book fair, Mr. Joel Hunt, was assisting me at the cash register when a second-grade child came to pay for two books she had picked out to purchase. We praised her for choosing books above her grade level, and I rang up her books. The total was $37. She then handed me one dollar and some change, all the money she had. Before I could tell her she didn’t have enough to buy the books, Mr. Hunt said he could not let her ambition go to waste and he paid the balance. Later that day, he also gave a kindergarten teacher $50 to buy a book for all the children in her class who did not have enough money. From all of us, book fair volunteers and Westside Media Center staff, we want to say, Thank you, Joel Hunt! The world needs more people like you!

Over 150 applicants applied for the handful of teaching jobs in Lowndes County. Plus, almost every single paraprofessional is a certified teacher who has been waiting patiently, “doing their time.” And, Lake Park Elementary hires a teacher who has quit, not once, but twice before. The "good ole' boy" network at its finest.

Have we progressed to the point where we are arguing about gay marriage? I thought the South was still outraged about blacks being able to marry whites! Hmm...We will catch up to the rest of the world eventually.

I found the cartoon referencing Tim Tebow's Christianity on Thursday's editorial page very offensive. I can agree that many people are out for what God can do for them, not how they can serve God, But I do not see any evidence of that attitude or life style in Tim Tebow's life. Time will tell.

Good riddance to the doctor unable to take Medicaid patients?! Do you work for free? I bet you go to work and expect a paycheck. Why would the doctor be any different? Blame our fearless leaders, not the doctors. And you are WAY out of line questioning whether that person is Christian or not. Sounds like the person who thinks preachers should work for free.

Amazing: Even a judgmental person like yourself can’t even bother to get the facts straight before you criticize something. Jason Collins did an extremely brave thing by coming out in a world filled with people such as yourself. Words of Wisdom: Leave the judging to God.

Raves to Mrs. Kay and Mrs. Sylvia at Cook Primary! They have the best behaved class and are the best teachers in that school!

To all who use Coleman Road as a short cut between Old Highway 41 North and North Valdosta Road, please remember the speed limit is 35, not 65. Tailgating me isn’t going to make me go faster. Remember, it’s our neighborhoods, not your short cut!

I hope Al Sharpton finds time to visit the mother in Brunswick whose baby was shot point blank in the forehead while in his baby stroller. Perhaps the reverend could also counsel the angry young black man who pulled the trigger. Oh wait, the baby was white. Never mind.

I thought that all schools had dress codes that the teachers and substitutes had to follow? When I walk into the school it looks like they are headed to the pool instead of the classroom. Tank tops and skimpy skirts are not allowed. Come on, administration, make them follow the rules. Thank you, to the teachers and staff that do adhere to the dress code.

Property tax should be based on value. School taxes should be separate and assessed to each household equally, no exemptions. The rich, middle and poor should pay equally for children's public education.
