Rant & Raves for Wednesday, February 27, 2013

VALDOSTA — A huge rave to our law enforcement officers in the very successful road block operation this past weekend. With helicopters in the sky, and almost 200 vehicles on the ground, you took it to the criminal element, making our streets and communities a safer place to live.

I think Martin Roesch is an excellent choice for City Schools Superintendent. I have known Martin for 30 years and don’t  think the Board of Education could have made a better choice.

Kudos to the two secretaries at Lowndes Middle School. When I come and check my children out of school even during their busiest time of day, they are both very nice and helpful and have a smile on their faces.

Rave to Stephanie at Advanced Disposal. They did not pick up my recycling and she had them right back out here the next  day.  Please give them a chance. They have been excellent on the phone and they have to just work out the kinks. They are trying to do their best.

I adopted a Chihuahua on Jan. 11 from the Animal Shelter and her name was Twitchy. Whoever gave her up must of had to for some reason. She is loved and being taken care of. Thank you for the gift.

Thank you to the VPD officer who gave a citation to the people begging for money at the AT&T/Target intersection. My sympathy goes out to anyone who falls on hard times; but Valdosta has so many resources to help you put clothes on your back, food in your mouth, and a roof over your head. Thank you, officer, for doing your job and what is best for our community!

Thank you PetSmart for supporting both the Lowndes County Animal Shelter's and the Humane Society's B.A.R.C., in their efforts to find homes for many loving and deserving animals. This is such a great cause, and kudos to you for reaching out to our community to help families find their perfect pet, and therefore helping animals find families who will love and care for them. Anyone who has ever "saved" an animal can vouch for the enormous love they bring.

Kudos to Korea Garden, a local family-owned and operated restaurant, a real find. Best egg rolls, glazed chicken, and tempura. It's delicious!

Huge rave to Kahau at Moody Lanes! She works long hours but always makes customers visits enjoyable. My family and I know it’s going to be a good time bowling when she’s working. We need more people with work ethics like her!

Alright Sister's Pizza, how am I supposed to cheat on my diet if you stay closed! The other pizza places are too far from downtown for my lunch hour and are a bit too greasy.

I am thankful I chose to stick with Deep South Sanitation. Our trash is always picked up right on time and he never leaves anything behind. After all my neighbors' trash is "picked up," often items are strewn by the road and the cans are either left in the road or fallen in or beside the road. Get rid of the big company and move to Deep South, if you want true customer service!

Over 150 applicants applied for the handful of teaching jobs in Lowndes County. Plus, almost every single paraprofessional is a certified teacher who has been waiting patiently, “doing their time.” And, Lake Park Elementary hires a teacher who has quit, not once, but twice before. The "good ole' boy" network at its finest.

Have we progressed to the point where we are arguing about gay marriage? I thought the South was still outraged about blacks being able to marry whites! Hmm...We will catch up to the rest of the world eventually.

I found the cartoon referencing Tim Tebow's Christianity on Thursday's editorial page very offensive. I can agree that many people are out for what God can do for them, not how they can serve God, But I do not see any evidence of that attitude or life style in Tim Tebow's life. Time will tell.

Good riddance to the doctor unable to take Medicaid patients?! Do you work for free? I bet you go to work and expect a paycheck. Why would the doctor be any different? Blame our fearless leaders, not the doctors. And you are WAY out of line questioning whether that person is Christian or not. Sounds like the person who thinks preachers should work for free.

Amazing: Even a judgmental person like yourself can’t even bother to get the facts straight before you criticize something. Jason Collins did an extremely brave thing by coming out in a world filled with people such as yourself. Words of Wisdom: Leave the judging to God.

Raves to Mrs. Kay and Mrs. Sylvia at Cook Primary! They have the best behaved class and are the best teachers in that school!

To all who use Coleman Road as a short cut between Old Highway 41 North and North Valdosta Road, please remember the speed limit is 35, not 65. Tailgating me isn’t going to make me go faster. Remember, it’s our neighborhoods, not your short cut!

I hope Al Sharpton finds time to visit the mother in Brunswick whose baby was shot point blank in the forehead while in his baby stroller. Perhaps the reverend could also counsel the angry young black man who pulled the trigger. Oh wait, the baby was white. Never mind.
