VALDOSTA —
When will administrators realize that the "fault" lies with the student? If a high school student gets a zero on a spelling test because they refuse to take it, then that certainly is not the fault of the teacher or the parent(s). All students should reap what they sow. Life will not be this cushy.
Mastery learning simply means that you do it until you get it right. Wouldn't you want your child to know something at an A level than at a C level? It makes learning fit the child's needs so that more children have complete understanding of what is taught. It is used in some college courses for subjects that require complete knowledge of a subject before going on to the next level.
I am confused about the discussion where Remerton police gave a young man a ticket for window tint violation. What confuses me is that it seems as if every Remerton police cruiser has tint that is very dark. Maybe even the darkest tint I have seen. Are all of those cars' tint at a legal level?
We were told that moving from an elected school superintendent to an appointed one would give the school system more professional leadership. Turned out that running for office every four years is a good reality check — something lacking in the current LCS Head Office.
It looks like the new grading system that LCS passed was made to help the school system meet AYP. Several schools in LCS have not met AYP for years. It is time for a new superintendent and new people at the central office who will try to improve students' learning and knowledge, and will not tell the public that everything is great when indeed it's not.
What is Lowndes County's new "grading system" supposed to teach the children, like my daughter, that work hard the first time to make good grades? It will teach them that it's not important to strive for those grades because they will just get to take the test over and over until they do get a good grade!
I realize people are probably getting tired of hearing about the politics in chambers. I think politics about business matters is one thing, but being vindictive is another matter. Political issues like bringing money into the county, better roads, etc., should be chamber issues. Personal issues with politicians should be set aside.
If you are as disgusted by the new LCS "grading policy" as our family is, call or email the Georgia Department of Education to complain.

No wonder! I haven’t seen the Peanut Lady at my son’s baseball game in a while. ... The Peanut Lady has been selling at ball games forever. Shame on whoever banned the Peanut Lady!

I know two LMS students who have continuously been in trouble this year and had mostly failing grades; however, now they are being promoted because teachers no longer can give zeros, but have to record a 60, even for assignments not turned in! How is it ethical to give grades that weren’t earned and what does this teach about responsibility and consequence?

If you cannot watch your children, perhaps you shouldn’t have children.

Concerning taking up multiple parking spots in “public” lots. Remember that these are mostly on private lots (including Walmart) and the only reason they don’t say anything is because they don’t want you taking your money elsewhere. A little courtesy, especially on busy days, goes a long way.

Are we really replacing hard-working persons with illegal aliens just to save a few dollars? Business owners should be wary and take care of those who have helped them get where they are now!

To the person who is referring to people complaining about people being on welfare; no one was pin-pointing you. I have been simply referring to the people to openly advertise how they cheat the system and never have to work, and live better than I do. And, for your information, I too am a single mother who struggles everyday to provide for my son. So, honey, I have walked a mile if not more in my own shoes of despair.

I have also heard the gunshots in Hahira. I’ve lived there for years but it seems to have gotten worse lately. I tried to tell a policeman in the store the other day but ... The last time I heard the shots was actually a couple Sundays ago, around lunchtime. I've assumed it was people hunting in the woods around Union Road but the shot pattern didn’t sound conducive to this last time.

I too would like to see a minor league baseball team located in Valdosta, but I doubt if it would be supported well enough to justify.
