VALDOSTA —
Valdosta State’s volleyball team followed Friday’s sweep of Alabama-Huntsville with another sweep of West Georgia on Saturday at The Complex.
The Blazers improved to 2-1 in Gulf South Conference play, and 8-3 overall. West Georgia dropped to 5-5 and 0-2 with the 25-15, 25-20, 25-19 loss.
The Blazers put on a dominating performance. Nikki McDaniel was the only Blazer to reach double-digit kills with 12, but she led all players. Katie Onushko added eight kills, with a .500 attacking percentage, while Lauren Aikens had eight kills and a .400 attacking percentage.
VSU setters Ashley Lala and Hope Ripsam combined for 35 assists, while libero Chelsea Luttfring had 12 digs. At the net defensively, Tania Tauiliili led the way with two solo blocks and four block assists to help VSU to 10 total blocks.
Emily Reul had 10 kills to lead West Georgia, while Amanda Miller had 17 assists. Libero Melissa Holt added 12 digs. The Wolves tallied seven total blocks.
Valdosta State had a dominating performance for most of the match, but struggled in the second set. The Blazers actually fell behind, 14-7, in the set, but rebounded to win, 25-20.
The Blazers will now go on the road for several matches. Valdosta State does not return to The Complex until Oct. 26, when it will host North Alabama at 7 p.m. That will be the beginning of a six-match homestand.
