Valdosta football teams dominate weekend

VALDOSTA — It was a successful weekend for teams that call Valdosta home. From all three high school teams to Valdosta State, Winnersville football was well-represented in this weekend.

On Friday, Lowndes, Valdosta and Valwood each won games. On Saturday, Valdosta State blew out Angelo State at Cowboys Stadium to cap-off a productive weekend of football for Titletown USA.

The four Valdosta-based teams didn’t just win, either. They dominated.

With Lowndes’ 38-0 win over Windsor Forest, Valdosta’s 45-0 win over struggling Crisp County, Valwood’s 36-8 win over previously undefeated Memorial Day and Valdosta State’s 43-10 win over Angelo State, Valdosta teams won by a combined 162-18, or an average of 36 points per game.

Three weeks into the season (four for Valwood), the four Valdosta-based teams are a combined 11-2.

Valdosta State’s dominating 33-point win over Angelo State capped off the weekend of football action. Playing at Cowboys Stadium, the Blazers dominated the Rams in every facet of the game. From offense to defense to special teams, the Blazers outplayed the Rams to secure their second win of the season.

Led by Gerald Ford’s two touchdown catches and 292 yards of rushing — the fifth-most in school history — the Blazer offense racked up 520 yards of total offense in the win.

Defensively, the Blazers allowed a season-low 262 yards of offense, including just 40 yards on the ground.

Valdosta’s 45-0 win over Crisp County was no surprise for those that follow football. The Cougars had yet to score a point in their previous two games before Friday’s meeting at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium. The Wildcats were licking their wounds following the upset loss to Brooks County the previous week.

On Friday, the Cougars were no match for the Wildcats.

Valdosta ran its way to the blow out win, gaining 338 yards on the ground. Nelson Herring finished with 163 yards on 11 carries with two touchdowns. Malcolm Joseph added 86 yards on 11 carries with a score of his own, while recording two catches for 61 yards and a receiving score. Tim McClain carried the load in the fourth quarter and finished with 89 yards and a score.

Lowndes’ offense struggled in Friday’s 38-0 win over Windsor Forest. The Vikings were held to just 182 yards of total offense on the night. That didn’t matter, though. The Viking defense pitched its second straight shutout and fourth in its last six games to improve the Vikings to 3-0 on the season.

Seniors Nick Burgman and Jordan Williams each finished with two rushing touchdowns, all of which came in the second half.

Khary Paige continued his impressive career in a Valwood uniform Friday night, carrying the Valiants to a 36-8 win over Memorial Day in The Valdosta Daily Times’ Game of the Week.

Paige rushed for 206 yards on 13 carries and four touchdowns in the Valiants’ non-region win at Goddard Field. Paige’s performance helped the Valiants overcome a lackluster night by quarterback Jake Lastinger, who completed just 2 of his 10 passes for 10 yards. He also threw an interception.

The Valwood defense also forced five turnovers on the night.

All four Valdosta teams are in action this week. Lowndes hosts Hardaway (2-1), Valdosta hosts Newton (0-2), who hasn’t played since its 31-0 loss to Lowndes on Sept. 7. Valwood vists Mount de Sales (1-3) in Macon.

Valdosta State opens Gulf South Conference action with a game at home against West Alabama (2-1).
