Blazer soccer remains perfect, beats Queens, 2-1

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Valdosta State had to go to extra time Sunday for the second consecutive match, but for the fifth time in a row, the Blazers finished with a victory. Valdosta State put away Queens, 2-1, in the second extra time period to improve to an undefeated 5-0 for the season. Queens drops to 2-5.

Speaking of streaks, the Blazers made it three consecutive goals that were unassisted. Sydney Smith scored the only goal of the match against West Georgia unassisted, and Rebecca Miller and Abbi Edwards both scored unassisted goals Sunday.

Miller was the first to find the net when she took advantage of a deflected ball in the box to score early in the 20th minute.

Queens was able to answer before the first frame ended. Mary Stringini set up Diamond Russos on a corner kick. Russos was able to finish with a header in the 40th minute just before the half ended.

The second half came and went without a goal despite both teams combining for 10 shots in the frame. Finally, in the 108th minute, Edwards, last season’s Gulf South Conference Freshman of the Year, scored off a rebound in front of the net to end the match.

Olivia Mills made two saves for Valdosta State while the goalkeeping combination of Kelsey Seretis and Emily Mager made seven saves.

Valdosta State brought the pressure in the first period with nine shots to just two for Queens.

The second half looked nearly the same as the Blazers tallied seven shots while Queens managed three. Valdosta State added two more shots in the first extra time period and finished with 19 shots total to just five for Queens.

Miller, who scored the first goal of the match, led VSU offensively with three shots on goal and six shots overall. Leanne Bishop added two shots on goal while four others placed a shot on goal.

Valdosta State returns home for the next match, a conference matchup against defending GSC Champion North Alabama at 5 p.m. Friday. VSU

Soccer is asking that Blazer fans “Pack the Pitch” and wear as much red as possible to support Valdosta State in this big match against the Lions.
