VALDOSTA —
It is a Friday of limited action, as just four of the schools in The Valdosta Daily Times’ coverage area are in action. Lowndes, Valdosta and Berrien are all home, while Brooks County returns to action after having last week off. The Trojans are at Mitchell County.
Hardaway Hawks (2-1) at Lowndes Vikings (3-0)
Hardaway and Lowndes meet for the first time since 1989 Friday night, when the surprising 2-1 Hawks visit Martin Stadium. After finishing 1-9 last season, Hardaway raced out to a 2-0 start, with wins over Jordan (0-3) and Columbus (0-2). Hardaway lost to Shaw 27-6 last week. Lowndes is looking for its first 4-0 start since 2009, when the Vikings started the year 5-0 before losing to Northside (Warner Robins). Friday’s game will be Homecoming for Lowndes.
Newton Rams (0-2) at Valdosta Wildcats (2-1)
After its 31-0 loss to Lowndes, Newton was off last week. After two shut out losses to start the year, the Rams are looking for their first points of the year against Valdosta, which bounced back from its loss to Brooks County with a 45-0 win over Crisp County. Friday’s meeting will be the first between the two schools. Valdosta opens region play Sept. 28 against Camden County. Friday’s game will serve as Homecoming for Valdosta High.
Brooks County Trojans (3-0) at Mitchell County Eagles (1-2)
After upsetting Valdosta, 28-24, two weeks ago, the Trojans were idle last week. Friday night, the Trojans return to action with a visit to Mitchell County. The Eagles are 1-2 this season after a loss to Clinch County and Albany. Mitchell County’s win this season came in 13-0 fashion against Pelham. Friday’s meeting will be the first between the two schools since 2009, when the Trojans earned a 42-0 win. Brooks County owns a three-game winning streak against Mitchell County.
Turner County Rebels (2-1) at Berrien Rebels (2-1)
Winners of their last two games, the Berrien Rebels look for their first three-game winning streak since 2009 when they host the Turner County Rebels Friday night at Raymond Jones Stadium. After allowing 36 points in their season opening loss to Calhoun County, the Rebels have allowed just 12 combined points the previous two weeks. Turner County enters Friday’s game with a 2-1 record after wins against Crisp County and Calhoun County and a two-point loss to Seminole County.

The nationally known organization that puts an emphasis on education and developing American youth has been established in the Valdosta area and will begin playing football this August. -
Blazers lose to Delta State, fall to loser’s bracket
If the Valdosta State baseball team is going to win the South Region Tournament, the Blazers going to have to do it from the loser’s bracket.
The Blazers (33-17) dropped their first game of the tournament Thursday, falling to Delta State 4-2 at UT Baseball Stadium.
VSU will face Stillman College, which lost to No. 1 seed and tournament host Tampa Thursday, Friday at 11 a.m. to advance to the weekend portion of the tournament. The loser will be eliminated. -
Lowndes’ Willis, Breit named Region 1 Coaches of the Year
The All-Region 1-AAAAAA soccer teams were announced Wednesday and Lowndes was well represented.
Lowndes coaches Chris Willis (girls) and Jordan Breit (boys) were named the Region Coaches of the Year, after leading the Lowndes teams to region championships and going undefeated in region play. -
Vikings commit 4 errors, fall to Roswell, 5-2
The small things matter in baseball, especially in a winner-take-all game three.
On Wednesday, Lowndes’ baseball team made too many mistakes on the little things. The Vikings committed four errors that led to five Roswell runs and were eliminated in the Class AAAAAA state playoffs with a 5-2 loss to the Hornets. -
Vikings, Hornets split
For the first time this postseason, Lowndes’ baseball team will have to play a decisive game three in order to advance to the next round of the state playoffs.
After splitting with Roswell Tuesday, the Vikings will host the Hornets in game three of the state quarterfinals series today at Noel George Field. First pitch of the winner-take-all game is set for 4:30 p.m. and Lowndes will be the home team after winning the coin toss following Tuesday’s doubleheader. -
Former Lady Blazer Ferguson hired to lead Vikettes
The sign above the door still has Shan Garner’s name on it. There is even a Shan Garner plaque sitting on one of the shelves in the corner of the gymnasium office.
