BOCA RATON, Fla. —
Valdosta State’s volleyball team split its two matches on Saturday at the Lynn Invitational.
The Blazers swept Assumption in convincing fashion, 25-18, 25-20, 25-9, but fell to Lynn, the host team, 25-22, 25-16, 25-23.
Freshman Nikki McDaniel led the Blazers on offense with 19 kills. Katie Onushko and Kelsey Kovar had 11 kills. Tania Tauiliili added 10 kills.
Ashley Lala had 31 assists in the two matches, while Hope Ripsam gave out 23 assists. Lala and Chelsea Luttfring led the team with 14 digs each. McDaniel added 13, while Krista Bradford dug up eight. Bradford also had eight aces.
Valdosta State had 11 blocks in each match, compared to just eight for Assumption and Lynn. Tauiliili tallied six of those blocks, while Destiny Berry and Onushko each had five. Lelalelei Nomura added three.
The VSU defense was strong against Assumption, holding the Greyhounds to a mere .035 attacking percentage and a negative percentage in the first set. Mary Johnston led the Assumption squad with eight kills, while Kristin Flatekval had 21 assists and nine digs to lead the team.
McDaniel paced VSU with 11 kills, while Tauiliili had eight. Lala had 19 assists in the match, and Ripsam added 12. Luttfring made 10 digs.
Valdosta State dominated the third set, putting Assumption away convincingly, 25-9.
On Saturday evening, the Blazers fell to Lynn in three sets.
Brianna Cox and Shannon Dugan each had nine kills for Lynn, while Brittany Brown had eight. Abbey Brokop gave out 18 assists, while Mandy McIntosh managed 10. Michelle Jordan had nine digs and Brokop made eight.
McDaniel tallied eight kills in the match for VSU, while Kovar had seven and Onushko added six. Lala and Ripsam combined for 23 assists. McDaniel and Lala had eight digs each.
Valdosta State returns home to host Shorter at 4 p.m. on Thursday at The Complex.

Blazers lose to Delta State, fall to loser’s bracket
If the Valdosta State baseball team is going to win the South Region Tournament, the Blazers going to have to do it from the loser’s bracket.
The Blazers (33-17) dropped their first game of the tournament Thursday, falling to Delta State 4-2 at UT Baseball Stadium.
VSU will face Stillman College, which lost to No. 1 seed and tournament host Tampa Thursday, Friday at 11 a.m. to advance to the weekend portion of the tournament. The loser will be eliminated. -
