VALDOSTA — Megan Rewis is the latest Lowndes High player to get a chance to play college softball.
Rewis, Lowndes’ right fielder, signed a letter of intent to play softball for Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College next season.
“Very excited,” Rewis said. “I don’t even know what to say. ”
“I’m excited for Megan,” Lowndes head softball coach Alex Gray said. “She was one of the core players of our outfield. She’s worked really hard over the past four years, and improved her game. Her mental approach is strong. She was a leader on our team. So for her to go to the next level is exciting. Good for the program, good for her, good for the kids that are coming up. She set a lot of good examples. She’ll be greatly missed; (we) can’t replace her. We’re happy for her, and look for her to do good things. I think she’s going to continue to improve, and be an impact player at the next level.
“Given the opportunity to play, I think she’s going to do well.”
“I’m real happy for Megan,” said Jared Dickey, who coached Rewis at Lowndes from 2006-08. “ABAC’s getting a good one.”
Rewis is the 19th Lowndes softball player to sign with a college in the last eight years.
Rewis will be going to a winning program. Since 1998, ABAC has won four state championships, and been the state runner-up twice.
“I like the school. I think I’ll do good there,” Rewis said. “I’ve met several of their players, and they seem nice.”
She also said she looks forward to playing for ABAC head coach Donna Campbell.
Rewis has been a member of Lowndes’ varsity team since her freshman year, and has started in the outfield for the past three years.
Rewis is an excellent defensive outfielder. She was given the award for being the Vikettes’ best defensive player this year.
“(Her) defense is huge,” Gray said. “She’s got a lot of speed, and a great accurate arm. She had a lot of assists in the outfield, and she made some amazing diving plays throughout the year, which kept us in some ballgames. I look for her to do really well in college.”
Both Rewis and her coaches say her other big asset is her blazing speed.
“She’s quick,” Dickey said. “She did a lot of running for us when she was a freshman.”
Rewis is a switch hitter. She has batted right-handed her whole life, but while at Lowndes, Dickey taught her how to become a slap hitter from the left side, to take advantage of her speed.
“It’s a good thing to have. I just learned it last year, and I caught on pretty fast,” Rewis said.
Rewis was a part of three Lowndes teams that made it to Columbus, the site of the state finals.
“It was fun (playing in Columbus),” she said. “You have to pick up your game there, because the Atlanta schools are all real good. I enjoyed it.”
Rewis was one of three seniors on Lowndes’ team this year, along with Brittany Corbitt and Lauren Burns. The Vikettes went 24-12 this year, and made it to the second round of the state sectional tournament. Lowndes went 30-8-1 in Rewis’ junior year, 21-16 her sophomore year and 20-15 when she was a freshman.
Rewis says she loves playing softball, and enjoyed playing for Lowndes.
In addition to playing for Lowndes, she plays travel ball for a team called the Slammers.
Rewis hopes to play two years at ABAC, then move on to a four-year school and play two more years. She wants to become a medical assistant.
