Valdosta State swept West Alabama away Friday night, 25-22, 25-20, 25-16. Even though it was senior day, the freshman Nikki McDaniel stood out for VSU with a team high eight kills.
Also putting together a strong night was redshirt freshman Lelalelei Nomura with seven kills and just two errors on 15 attacks for a team high .333 hitting percentage. Both seniors Katie Onushko and Tania Tauiliili finished with five kills.
Ashley Lala gave out 27 assists and finished with 12 digs for the double-double. Chelsea Luttfring led all players with 15 digs while McDaniel added 10 more.
The Blazers were able to outblock West Alabama, 8-4. Tauiliili spearheaded the effort at the net for VSU with three solo blocks and three assists.
Valdosta State held West Alabama to just a .083 team hitting percentage. Chanel Davis however had the best offensive night with 13 kills on 26 attacks with four errors for a .346 hitting percentage. Chelsea Payne gave out 31 assists while Carly Wehling and Cynthia Smith each had 13 digs.
The Blazer defense actually forced a negative hitting percentage from UWA in the second set.
Valdosta State is back in action when it hosts West Florida at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
