VALDOSTA —
Valdosta’s football program held its annual four-man scramble golf tournament on Friday at the Valdosta Country Club.
There were 108 golfers competing in the fourth annual Wildcat Football Golf Tournament.
“It went great,” said tournament organizer Justin Henderson, Valdosta’s defensive ends coach. “We had an outpouring of support from the community. ... It was a huge success.”
The winning team was the foursome of Franklin Bailey, Dr. Jared Bailey, Chris Greene and Bill Spell with a net score of 49.5.
Nathaniel Balanis, John Dennis Wetherington, Steven Hall and Dr. Hernando Moreno finished second with a 51.38 net score. Royce Coleman, Joe Griffin, Jamie Griffin and Valdosta defensive coordinator Alan Rodemaker finished third.
Adam Haire, an assistant baseball coach at VHS, won the longest drive competition.
On the fourth hole of the Bellemeade course, players had the option of letting LPGA Tour golfer Dori Carter hit a tee shot for them for an extra $10. Carter, a former Wildcat who won four region championships at VHS then became an All-American golfer at the University of Mississippi, volunteered to hit the tee shots to help raise extra money for her alma mater.
Carter delivered for the teams. She put her tee shots on the green for nearly every foursome. And a few times, when she didn’t like her tee shots, she went to the green and sank a putt.
“We appreciate her coming out,” Henderson said. “She’s a Valdosta alumnus, and she wanted to do what she could to help.”
Golfers had an opportunity to win a car from Langdale Hyundai if they could make a hole-in-one on the fourth hole, but no one made one.
Henderson thanked all of the tournament’s sponsors, including the 82 hole sponsors and Valdosta Orthopedic Associates, the tournament’s lunch sponsor.
All of the proceeds from the tournament will go to the Valdosta football program to help with expenses.
“It helps tremendously,” Henderson said. “You spend a lot of money (on a football program). We’ve been able to purchase (a lot of things for the football team). It really helps boost the facilities without putting a strain on your athletic budget.”
On Thursday night, the Wildcats held an auction at the Country Club. A number of items were auctioned off, including two hunts, a fishing trip and many Wildcat-related items. Henderson said the auction raised over $7,000.
