Lowndes on road to face Packers

VALDOSTA — Lowndes came out of the Winnersville Classic with a victory, placing its playoff destiny strictly in its own hands. The path to the playoffs and a Region 1-AAAAA championship continues today as the Vikings travel to Colquitt County.

After facing a strong Valdosta team, Lowndes (6-1, 3-0 in Region 1-AAAAA) will need to continue to keep its focus against the 2-5 Colquitt County Packers.

The Packers picked up their second win of the season, snapping a three game losing streak, two weeks ago in a 21-7 victory against Houston County.

Prior to the game against the Bears, Colquitt was giving up 326.2 yards per game.

The Vikings are averaging 292.5 yards per game while giving up 136.2.

On the ground, Colquitt gave up 99 rushing yards to the Bears, whereas the Vikings allowed just 42.

Despite the statistical differences, Lowndes coach Randy McPherson said his team is still ready to play a tough football game.

“Moultrie has always had a good football team, and this year is no different,” McPherson said. “They’ve got speed on defense, and speed on offense. We’re going to have to play well to beat them.”

The Packers rely on Eric Key, Travon Littleton and John Michael Harrison for their offense.

Key is the key to the running game, rushing 70 times for 335 yards and four touchdowns, while Littleton has 159 yards on 43 carries and three touchdowns.

Harrison leads the Packers at quarterback, throwing for 324 yards on 28-of-82 passing, while also throwing five interceptions.

While the Packers don’t seem to be as big of a challenge on paper then say Coffee or Valdosta, the Vikings are taking their usual approach to a game, working to improve each week.

“We’re trying to play better, and fix some of the mistakes we made last week,” McPherson said “That’s what we try to do every week, get better.”

Directions to Mack Tharpe Stadium: Take Ga. 133 (St. Augustine Road) north out of Valdosta about 45 miles to Moultrie. Go through downtown Moultrie, then turn left onto Main Street. Go 1.5 miles on Main Street, then turn right at the Domino's Pizza. The stadium will be on your left. Parking is somewhat limited, so arrive early.
