Echols, Georgia Christian, Brooks girls teams win

Echols sweeps Ware Magnet

STATENVILLE — Echols County’s girls basketball team outscored Ware Magnet 31-4 in the second half, en route to a 62-21 victory Saturday night.

Shericka Nobles scored 18 points and also had seven steals for the Lady Wildcats (7-4). Ciera Staten scored 17 points.

Echols’ boys defeated Ware Magnet 54-40. JoJo Tucker scored 18 points and grabbed 17 rebounds in the win. Justin Brown had 13 points and nine rebounds, and Jacob Brantley added 12 points and eight rebounds.

Echols travels to Bacon County on Tuesday.



Georgia Christian girls dominate

HINESVILLE — Georgia Christian’s girls basketball team dominated First Presbyterian Christian Academy Saturday, winning 56-19.

Kailynn Jeffords scored 13 points, while Samantha Sloan had 11 points and Rachel Swilley had 10.

Georgia Christian’s boys, however, fell 74-30 to FPCA, the defending state champions. Grant Colson scored 17 points for the Generals.

Georgia Christian hosts Melody Christian Monday night, then welcomes Providence to Dasher for Homecoming next Saturday.



Brooks girls hammer Fitzgerald

QUITMAN — Michelle Scott scored 24 points, leading Brooks County’s girls basketball team to a 75-40 win over Fitzgerald Saturday night. Jasmine Lark and Jasmine Mapp each had 12 points for Brooks, which improved to 10-3.

Brooks’ boys fell 50-47. Darin Edwards led the Trojans with 12 points.

Brooks hosts Albany on Tuesday.

    Jamesia Jones led Lowndes with 10 points, while Courtne Washington had nine. Tasia Brown finished with eight.

    Just 24 hours after earning an impressive opening day victory, the Valdosta State baseball team struggled to find a rhythm against North Georgia, as the Blazers fell to the Saints 8-3.
    North Georgia pitcher Blake Hobby was a major factor for VSU’s struggles. The senior right-hander held the Blazers to just one run on four hits across his eight innings of work on the hill.

    Tift County won the Region 1-AAAAA traditional wrestling championship on Saturday at Lowndes High School.
    Tift had three individual region champions, had wrestlers place in the top three in 13 of the 14 weight classes and qualified wrestlers for next weekend’s sectional tournament in all 14 weight classes. Tift earned 184 team points, two points more than second-place Lowndes.

  • Wildcats beat Crisp in overtime

    Valdosta’s boys basketball team dominated the overtime period, and defeated Crisp County 66-56 on Saturday night at the VHS gym.
    The Wildcats outscored the Cougars 17-7 in overtime to pull away for the win.
    “Another big win,” Valdosta head coach Antonio Haynes said. “I’m happy for the guys. They played hard. They deserved this win.”
