Bobo speaking at Valdosta High football banquet

VALDOSTA — Valdosta High will recognize its 2008 football team Monday night at its annual banquet.

Mike Bobo, the offensive coordinator at the University of Georgia, will be the keynote speaker.

The banquet will begin with dinner in the VHS cafeteria at 6 p.m. At 7 p.m., the main program will begin in the school’s Performing Arts Center.

The banquet is free for Valdosta Touchdown Club members and $10 for non-members. A person can join the Touchdown Club Monday night.

After dinner, a highlight video from the 2008 season will be shown in the PAC, leading into the main program. After Bobo’s speech, individual awards will be handed out to Valdosta players.

Valdosta went 5-5 last season, and finished sixth in Region 1-AAAAA.

Bobo is a South Georgia native. He was a standout quarterback at Thomasville High before going on to star at Georgia.

He has been the quarterbacks coach for the Bulldogs and head coach Mark Richt since 2001. He has helped David Greene and D.J. Shockley develop into NFL quarterbacks. Greene holds the Southeastern Conference record for career passing yards (11,528). Georgia’s most recent starting quarterback, Matthew Stafford, could be the No. 1 overall pick in April’s NFL draft.

Since December 2006, Bobo has been Georgia’s offensive coordinator. During Bobo’s seven seasons on the Bulldogs’ staff, the team has won 71 games.

Bobo will have a chance to interact with one of his future players Monday. Valdosta linebacker Mike Gilliard, an All-State selection, signed with the Bulldogs last month. Bobo was one of the coaches who recruited Gilliard for Georgia.
