SAVANNAH — After beating Memorial Day 29-0 on Friday, Valwood fell to Memorial Day 11-7 in game 2 of the first round of the GISA Class AA state playoffs on Saturday. However, the Valiants recovered to win the series in game 3 with a 15-6 win.
Carter Karras pitched a complete game and struck out 11 batters in game 3. He also hit three home runs and had eight RBIs.
Todd Baker went 5-for-5, Deron Smith went 3-for-5 with four runs, Alex Waldron had two hits and Troy Woodward scored three runs for the Valiants.
Valwood scored five runs in the fifth inning and four in the sixth inning.
In the game 2 loss, Jake Reeves had four strikeouts, and Casey Guilliams and Wyatt Harris had two hits apiece.
The Valiants are making their first playoff appearance in seven years. This is the first time they have advanced to the quarterfinals since 1993. Valwood hosts Heritage from Columbus on Friday.
