Blazer soccer falls to UAH, 3-1

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Despite winning the first set, 25-19, Valdosta State could not keep momentum as Alabama-Huntsville went on to beat VSU, 3-1 (19-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-15), Friday night. The loss drops the Blazers to 11-7 overall while UAH improves to 9-12.

Katie Onushko put down 17 kills in the match while Nikki McDaniel added 12. Middle blocker Tania Tauiliili had eight kills while no other Blazer had more than three.

Ashley Lala gave out 38 assists with 10 digs while Krista Bradford and Chelsea Luttfring each had 14 digs. McDaniel doubled up with 10 digs herself.

Valdosta State tallied five blocks, but Alabama-Huntsville put down 15 blocks, led by Kelsey Williams with nine block assists and a solo block. The 15 blocks were the difference in the match as the Chargers finished with 15 more overall points than the Blazers.

Angela Thurmond led UAH offensively with 18 kills while Haley Snyder added 12. Ashton Baker gave out 39 assists with 10 digs while Stacey Sargent added 19 digs.

As it was the only set the Blazers won, the first set was VSU’s best. The Blazers struck 18 kills, then decreased from there with 13 in the second, eight in the third and just five in the final set of the match. Meanwhile, Alabama-Huntsville started with 10 kills in the first set followed by 14 in the second and 16 each in the third and fourth.

Valdosta State will look to jump back on track with a 2 p.m. match at West Georgia Saturday.
