VALDOSTA —
After a tough road trip the Valdosta State Blazers rebounded Friday night with a sweep of conference rival North Alabama, 31-29, 25-18, 25-22. The win was even more impressive as the Blazers lost in five to the Lions on the road. The win improves VSU to 14-11 on the season and 6-6 in the GSC while UNA drops to 10-12 and 6-5.
The undoubted leader for VSU Friday was Tania Tauiliili. She hit for 16 kills with a .667 attacking percentage while Ashley Lala hit .625 with six kills on eight attacks. She also gave out 39 assists. Chelsea Luttfring tallied a match-high 14 digs while Katie Onushko was the only other Blazer with double digit kills, finishing with 10.
After the first set went all the way to 31-29, the match was setting up to look much like the last one. However, VSU was able to win the second set convincingly, 25-18. Up, 18-17, Onushko was able to serve five consecutive point to give the Blazers a 22-17 lead and control of the match.
Valdosta State hit .324 as a team in the third set to secure the victory.
The Blazers will continue a three-match weekend with matches against Christian Brothers and Union at 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
