Straka qualifies for U.S. Amateur Open

Former Lowndes High golfer now plays for Georgia

ATLANTA — Former Lowndes golfer Sepp Straka has qualified for the U.S. Amateur Open golf tournament after shooting a two-day score of 133 (9-under) at the U.S. Amateur Qualifier at the Piedmont Golf Club in Atlanta.

Straka shot an opening round 68 and followed it up with a 65 on Wednesday to qualify for the event. Straka was the only player from South Georgia to qualify for the U.S. Amateur Open. The other five qualifiers reside in either metro Atlanta or Athens.

Oliver Schniederjans, a rising junior at Georgia Tech, won the event with a 10-under 132, edging Straka by just one stroke.

Straka was a member of Lowndes’ 2011 state championship golf team. He and his brother Sam are currently members of the University of Georgia’s golf team.

Qualifiers advance to the 112th annual U.S. Amateur Championship, which will be held at Cherry Hills Country Club in Cherry Hills Village, Colo., Aug. 13-19.  Entries were open to any amateur golfer with a USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 2.4. The U.S. Amateur is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the USGA.

The winner of the U.S. Amateur is invited to play in the U.S. Open Championship the following year.
