VALDOSTA —
Valdosta’s baseball team dropped a pair of games on Friday on the third day of the South Georgia Diamond Brawl.
The Wildcats fell 4-0 to Crisp County and 9-1 to South Aiken (S.C.) on Friday at Bazemore Field.
South Aiken used an eight-run third inning to pull away for its victory.
The Thoroughbreds led 1-0 heading into the third inning when all of a sudden, their bats came alive. South Aiken’s Cory Bryant started the inning with a walk, then stole second and went to third when the catcher’s throw went into center field. Xavier Peralta drove in Bryant with a single. After another single, Peralta scored on a fielder’s choice. The next three batters drew walks, and another run crossed the plate. Stokes Griffin and Reese Willis followed with back-to-back RBI singles, giving the Thoroughbreds a 6-0 lead.
Mars Flores reached on an infield single, scoring Evan Kearse, then after a pitching change, another run came home on Bryant’s ground out. Two batters later, Taylor Widener drew a bases loaded walk, which brought home the Thoroughbreds’ final run of the inning.
By the time Valdosta finally got out of the inning, South Aiken had scored eight runs on five hits and six walks, and held a 9-0 lead.
The Thoroughbreds also scored a run in the second. Landon Holley walked to start the inning, took second on a Preston Dawson single and scored on Kearse’s single to right.
A trio of Thoroughbred pitchers held Valdosta scoreless until the fifth inning. The Wildcats put two men on with one out in the first and loaded the bases with one out in the second, but both times, South Aiken starter Jamie Morlan retired the next two hitters to escape the jam.
Valdosta scored its only run in the bottom of the fifth. David Posas led off with a single and Logan Stephens walked, putting two men on with no outs. Two batters later, Brennan Goodson lined a single to right, and Posas came home from second to make the final score 9-1.
No Valdosta player had more than one hit in the game.
Before taking on South Aiken, Valdosta fell 4-0 to Crisp County. The Wildcats were shut out and limited to just five hits in the loss.
Kyle Wilkes had two of the Wildcats’ five hits. Valdosta pitcher Jacob Davis pitched a complete game, and held Crisp to just one earned run.
The Wildcats’ most serious scoring threat came in the bottom of the seventh, when they put two men on with one out. But the next two batters were retired on fly balls, ending the threat.
Valdosta’s varsity team plays a doubleheader today against Statesboro, on the final day of the South Georgia Diamond Brawl. Game 1 begins at 10:30 a.m. at Bazemore Field.
