VALDOSTA —
The unofficial start to the 2013 college football season comes today.
College football prospects throughout the country will sign national letters of intent with the college of their choice, after months of recruiting trips and meetings with coaches.
Locally, 14 players will sign football letters of intent at signing ceremonies held throughout the day at the various high schools.
Valdosta will hold a signing ceremony at 9 a.m. in the school’s little theater.
Three Wildcats — Anthony Evans, Ronnie Stoney and John White — will all sign letters of intent to various colleges, which will be announced at the event.
Lowndes will hold a signing ceremony at 11 a.m. in its new gymnasium.
Seven Vikings will sign football scholarships, while cross country and track star Megan Charbeneau will sign a track scholarship with the University of Georgia.
In football, Tiquan Lang, Nick Burgman, Sam Washington, Anfernee Chandler, Jordan Williams, Alex Stephenson and Kenny Moore will all sign scholarships.
At Valwood, three Valiants will sign football scholarships during a ceremony at 10 a.m. Rashad Mathis, Khary Paige and Griffin Clyatt will all sign with colleges. Senior Aulden Bynum, the school’s first Division I signee, has already enrolled at Georgia and will participate in spring practice when the Bulldogs begin in March.
Cook’s Matt Foster will sign his national letter of intent to either Middle Tennessee State or the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga during a ceremony at 8:15 a.m. at Cook High School in Adel. Foster was a member of the All Region 1-AA team following the 2012 season.
No players from Brooks County, Berrien, Lanier County or Clinch County will sign Wednesday.
This year’s National Signing Day comes without national exposure in Valdosta, a rarity in the football-filled city.
In 2008, Lowndes’ Greg Reid signed live on ESPNU, announcing he was going to attend Florida State University. Reid was joined in 2010 by Valdosta’s Jay Rome, as players to announce live on ESPNU. Last year, Lowndes’ Josh Harvey-Clemons announced his decision to attend UGA live on ESPNU.
Today, some of the nation’s best players will announce their college choices. The national coverage begins at 7:30 a.m., when the nation’s top-ranked recruit, Grayson High School’s Robert Nkemdiche, announces his choice live on ESPNU.
Wednesday is also national signing day for soccer. On Friday, Lowndes will honor its four signees from this year’s senior class. Ashley Miller and Maggie-Laine Powell will sign with Valdosta State and Hannah-Jo Isaacson and Katie Willis will sign with Georgia Southwestern.
