Region 1 tourney begins today at VHS

VALDOSTA — The Region 1-AAAAAA basketball tournament begins today at Valdosta High School and continues throughout the remainder of the week.

The tournament starts tonight with the region play-in games. The Coffee girls, the region’s sixth seed from the regular season, will face Camden County at 6 p.m. in the girls’ play-in game. In the boys’ game, scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off, Camden County will play Colquitt County.

The winners of tonight’s games will advance to Tuesday’s first round and will face Brunswick, the No. 3 seed on both the girls and boys side.

The top two seeds from the girls and boys side have earned byes for Tuesday’s first round, meaning neither Valdosta or Tift County teams will play until the semifinals on Thursday.

No tournament games will be played Wednesday night.

The region semifinals will be held Thursday night and the region championship games will be held Friday night, following the girls and boys consolation games.

Lowndes will open its region tournament schedule when the Vikettes face Colquitt County Tuesday at 4 p.m. The teams split their two regular season meetings this season, with Lowndes winning a triple-overtime thriller at Lowndes. The Vikettes fell to Colquitt County 58-54 in Moultrie.

The Vikings will play immediately following the Vikettes’ game on Tuesday. The Vikings will play the Coffee Trojans, the only team in the region to beat No. 1 seed Tift County this year.

The Trojans and Vikings split their two regular season meetings this season, with the Vikings winning the most recent meeting 44-32 last week.

The losers of Tuesday’s games will be eliminated from the tournament and postseason play, joining the losers of today’s play-in games. The winners of Tuesday’s games are guaranteed at least the fourth seed from the region for the Class 6A state basketball tournament, which begins next week.

The winner of the Lowndes girls versus Colquitt County matchup Tuesday will face regular season region champion Valdosta Thursday night at 7 p.m.

The Tift County girls will face the winner of the Brunswick versus either Coffee/Camden County game Thursday at 4 p.m.

The final undefeated girls teams from Thursday’s games will meet for the region championship Friday night at 7 p.m. The losers will meet in the consolation game Friday at 4 p.m.

On the boys’ side, regular season region champion Tift County will host the winner of Tuesday’s Lowndes/Coffee game Thursday night at 8:30 p.m.

The winner of the Brunswick versus Camden/Colquitt County game will face the Valdosta Wildcats at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

The two remaining unbeaten boys teams will play in the region championship game Friday night at 8:30 p.m. The losers of Thursday’s games will meet in the consolation game at 5:30 p.m.

Girls: 4 Colquitt vs. 5 Lowndes, 4 p.m.

Boys: 4 Coffee vs. 5 Lowndes, 5:30 p.m.

Girls: 3 Brunswick vs. 6/7 winner, 7 p.m.

Boys: 3 Brunswick vs. 6/7 winner, 8:30 p.m.



Thursday

Girls: 2 Tift County vs. 3/6/7 Winner, 4 p.m.

Boys: 2 Valdosta vs. 3/6/7 Winner, 5:30 p.m.

Girls: 1 Valdosta vs. 4/5 Winner, 7 p.m.

Boys: 1 Tift vs. 4/5 winner, 8:30 p.m.



Friday

Girls consolation game, 4 p.m.

Boys consolation game, 5:30 p.m.

Girls championship, 7 p.m.

Boys championship, 8:30 p.m.

    The Blazers (33-17) dropped their first game of the tournament Thursday, falling to Delta State 4-2 at UT Baseball Stadium.
    VSU will face Stillman College, which lost to No. 1 seed and tournament host Tampa Thursday, Friday at 11 a.m. to advance to the weekend portion of the tournament. The loser will be eliminated.

     The All-Region 1-AAAAAA soccer teams were announced Wednesday and Lowndes was well represented.
    Lowndes coaches Chris Willis (girls) and Jordan Breit (boys) were named the Region Coaches of the Year, after leading the Lowndes teams to region championships and going undefeated in region play.

    On Wednesday, Lowndes’ baseball team made too many mistakes on the little things. The Vikings committed four errors that led to five Roswell runs and were eliminated in the Class AAAAAA state playoffs with a 5-2 loss to the Hornets.
