VALDOSTA —
Heavy rain forced officials of the Valdosta State University 7-on-7 passing tournament to cancel the final semifinal game and the championship of the tournament Saturday night at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium.
The tournament was called with just nine minutes remaining in the second semifinal game featuring Dunbar (Fla.) and Lincoln (Fla.). Valdosta won the first semifinal game of Trenton (Fla.) and had already advanced to the championship game.
The tournament will not be made up.
The day began with 13 teams from 12 schools — Valdosta had two teams competing — competing in a round robin tournament. Each team was guaranteed four games before the playoffs of the tournament began.
Pool games were played at both the VSU Athletic Fieldhouse and Bazemore-Hyder Stadium.
The scoring system for the tournament was simple. Offenses were awarded six points for scoring a touchdown, and then given the option to go for a one or two-point conversion.
The defensive units were able to record points for their teams by holding the opposing offenses without points. If the defenses made a stop between the 40 and 20-yard lines they were awarded two points. If the defensive units made a stop between the 20-yard line and goal line they were awarded one points. Interceptions were worth three points.
Also on Saturday, there was a lineman challenge hosted by VSU. Wakulla (Fla.) High School won the event.
