VALDOSTA —
Jennifer Findley and Taryn Corbin began cheering at each other’s side at the age of six. They have been inseparable since.
The two best friends from Lake Park will get the opportunity to continue to cheer with one another for the next four years, as the Lowndes High senior competition cheerleaders have both earned their way on to the Valdosta State cheerleading team.
The two will likely join the all-girl competition team that was responsible for winning Valdosta State its first all-girl NCA National Championship in 2011.
For Corbin, 18, the relationship she already held with VSU head coach Dante Tennant was a major reason she tried out for the team. Tennant currently serves as Corbin’s coach through the Winnersville Elite Cheer and Dance All-Star program.
Corbin is also an employee at Winnersville, which is the practice location for Valdosta State.
“I work there, and I always see VSU people, and I got to know a lot of them really well,” said Corbin as her reason to join VSU.
Both Corbin and Findley, 18, said the recent success by the VSU program doesn’t scare or intimidate them, but rather excites them about joining the established program.
“We know most of them, and some of them cheer on our teams that we have for Winnersville,” said Findley, who is also a member of an All-Star team at Winnersville. “My most pressure will be from Dante, trying to get my a full.”
Both girls were key pieces to helping Lowndes claim back-to-back Region 1-AAAAA championships.
“It is exciting,” said Lowndes head coach Melissa Trolinger. “I’ve had some cheerleaders previously go to VSU, but these two are the most talented ones that I’ve had go. And to see them cheer for VSU, which has won national titles and knowing they can be a part of that, is exciting for me.”
Corbin and Findley said they are looking to obtain degrees in the medical field.
Corbin said she hopes to become a maternity nurse, while Findley hopes to become an Anesthesiologis.
