Telfair County beats Lanier County, 30-13

LAKELAND — The Telfair County Trojans improved to 5-3 after beating the Lanier County Bulldogs 30-13 Friday night at Roquemore Field.

The Bulldogs (2-7) managed to grab a slim halftime, but gave way to a 21-point second half by Telfair County.

“It’s what we’ve done all year long,” Lanier County head coach David Ward said. “We play a half, either the first or second. We can’t play a complete football game. I don’t know what it is. We do stuff and work on it, it looks like a million dollars then we get in the game and we act like we’ve never seen it.”

The Trojans got on the scoreboard first after senior linebacker Charlie Woods blocked the Bulldogs’ punt on their opening drive. The blocked ball traveled to the back of the end zone which committed a safety minutes into the game.

Lanier County responded on the ensuing possession when sophomore quarterback Jake Walker found senior Jovan Smith for a 49-yard touchdown catch to give the Bulldogs a 7-2 lead.

Telfair County took back the lead when they capped off a 69-yard drive when running back Byron Brown scored from nine yards out to put the Trojans in front 9-7.

Both teams swapped possessions back-and-forth until the Lanier County was able capitalized on great field position off a Trojan punt.

The 43-yard drive was finished when Smith caught a pass from Walker then lateraled the ball to Marcello Brockington, who scored the 41-yard touchdown. The score put the Bulldogs ahead 13-9 at the half.

Walker’s only two completions of first half went for 90 total yards and two touchdowns.

Telfair County came into the third quarter much more aggressive on defense.

“The defense played lights out,” said Telfair County head coach Matt Burleson.  “We had a little chat at halftime about the things we need to correct and we executed very well in the second half. They responded to the challenge we put to them.”

On the first play of the second half, Walker had his pass intercepted and the Trojans took advantage by scoring on a 2-yard quarterback keeper to cap off the ensuing possession.

Lanier County went down 16-13 half through the third quarter.

The Bulldogs turned the ball over on their ensuing possession, and Telfair County started its drive on the Bulldogs 4-yard line.

The Trojans needed just one play as Austin Ban found the end zone to put Telfair in front 23-13.

In the final minutes of the game, the Trojans closed the scoring with a 21-yard touchdown run Mackey, which put the game out of reach.

“You can’t give three turnovers to a good football team. That’s all I can say,”

Ward said.
