VALDOSTA —
The current fight being put forward by public schools from the Georgia High School Association’s Class A level took a turn in the favor of the schools on Wednesday.
According to the GHSA’s executive committee’s Jan. 10 meeting agenda, the reclassification subcommittee will ask the executive committee to discuss the possible split between private and public schools during postseason play, resulting in separate state champions for all sports at the Class A level.
The move to separate public and private schools at the state’s lowest classification is a move that was brought forward by administration from public Class A schools as early as January of this year.
According to Alan Ingram, the Director of Athletics at Seminole County High School, who spoke with The Valdosta Daily Times back in early December, the proposed plan that was brought forward by the public schools was voted against, after initially being accepted, by the executive committee back on Oct. 6. That led to a Dec. 13 meeting in Wilcox County; a meeting where Class A public schools met to discuss the possibility of leaving the GHSA and creating their own organization that would govern high school athletics.
At the Dec. 13 meeting, a committee was established by the 33 schools in attendance to create by-laws for a potential new league. The committee’s by-laws are set to be presented at a Jan. 4 meeting, which at that time the administration from the public schools in attendance will decide on whether they will ask their school boards to make a potential move to the new organization or stay in the GHSA.
Now, with the GHSA modifying its agenda for its Jan. 10 meeting, and adding the discussion of the public-private split to the agenda, Class A public schools could be line to remain as members of the GHSA moving forward, leaving out the headache of putting together a new organization.
The GHSA executive committee was already scheduled to vote on the ratification of the new region reclassification’s at the Jan. 10 meeting. At this time, it is unclear on what a potential postseason split between public and private schools at the Class A level will do to the new region alignments.
