VALDOSTA —
The Lowndes County 4-H Senior Compound Archery Team won several awards at the National 4-H Shooting Sports Invitational earlier this month in Grand Island, Neb.
Lowndes finished fourth in the overall team competition and first in 3-D.
The team consisted of Preston Barker, Sam Bennett, Braydon Cope and John Lupineck.
The goal of 3-D archery is to guess how far away the target is and know where to shoot to achieve the highest possible score. The 3-D event can be set in the woods or fields. The Georgia delegation braved heavy rains and 30-40 mph winds in Nebraska throughout their week of events.
The majority of the shoots are unmarked yardage. This means the archer stands at a designated stake and makes an educated guess as to how far away the target is located. Then he takes his shot, trying to score the highest possible points.
The Lowndes County 4-H team earned team honors, and two archers received individual awards. John Lupinek placed first in 3-D and Preston Barker placed second in 3-D and sixth overall out of 82 competitors.
The team is led and mentored by Gary Crosby, a certified Georgia 4-H archery coach and volunteer. Other certified coaches assisting the team are Jim Barker, John Crosby and Shane Palmer.
Through expertise of volunteers and strong financial community support, Lowndes County 4-H builds life skills through healthy competition with archery.
Some of the objectives for the program are to teach decision making, teamwork, self-discipline, self-confidence and problem solving; to promote the highest standards of safety, sportsmanship and ethical behavior; to encourage an appreciation and understanding of natural resources; to develop leadership abilities; to build character and willingness to assume citizenship responsibility; to furnish enjoyable, positive relationships with peers and adult instructors; to strengthen families through participation in lifelong recreational activities and to build awareness of related career opportunities.
The Shooting Sports curriculum uses the resources of the land-grant university and the time, talent and dedication of Cooperative Extension agents and certified 4-H leaders, instructors and trainers who instruct 4-H members in firearms safety and marksmanship. The shooting disciplines open to Lowndes County youth include archery and shotgun. Each discipline is taught by a National or State Certified Instructor. 4-H members have opportunities to test their shooting, hunting and sportsmanship skills in county, regional, state and national competitions. In fact, they could ultimately set Olympic competition as their goal. There are 17 Olympic shooting sports events, which continue to draw the third-greatest number of countries.
