Lowndes tennis teams dominate on Day 1 of tournament

VALDOSTA — Lowndes’ tennis teams dominated their first round matches at the Viking Invitational on Friday afternoon.

The LHS boys and girls both defeated Wayne County 5-0. They won all 10 matches in straight sets.

Lowndes’ boys team did not lose a match or a set against Wayne, and they almost managed to win all five matches without even losing a game. Four of the five matches ended 6-0, 6-0.

Samuel Price won his No. 1 singles match 6-0, 6-0. John Fuller won the No. 2 singles match 6-0, 6-0, and Ben Burkhalter won the No. 3 singles match by the same score.

Dylan Farmer and Trent Parker won 6-0, 6-0 in the No. 1 doubles match. Josh Fricker and Zack Ridge won the No. 2 doubles match 6-0, 6-1.

Lowndes’ boys will face Region 1-6A rival Colquitt County in the tournament semifinals today at 10 a.m. at the Valdosta State tennis courts.

While the Vikings were dominating their match at VSU, a mile away at McKey Park, Lowndes’ girls were winning in convincing fashion as well. Taylor Vinge won the No. 1 singles match 6-1, 6-1. Alden Minick blanked her opponent 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Emily Singletary won the No. 3 singles match 6-2, 6-2.

In doubles, Lori and Laina Taylor won 6-1, 6-1, while Haley Tubbs and Maggie Wisenbaker won 6-0, 6-0.

Like the boys, Lowndes’ girls will face Colquitt in the semifinals today at 10 a.m. at McKey Park.

In Friday’s other girls matches, Bleckley County defeated Thomas County Central 3-2, Colquitt won 4-1 over Bainbridge and Norcross beat Tift County 4-1.

Bleckley and Norcross will meet in the other girls semifinal today at 10 a.m. In the loser’s bracket matches, Wayne will face Bainbridge and Thomas County Central will play Tift today at 8:30 a.m.

In the other boys matches, Bleckley swept Thomas County Central, Norcross beat Tift and Colquitt knocked off Bainbridge. All of the boys matches ended 5-0.

Bleckley and Norcross will meet in the other boys semifinal at 10 a.m. at Valdosta State. In the loser’s bracket, Wayne will face Bainbridge and Thomas County Central will play Tift County today at 8:30 a.m.
