Vikings win Dynamite Goodloe tournament

VALDOSTA — The Lowndes golf team shot a 302, and won the Dynamite Goodloe Invitational by 12 strokes on Monday at the Valdosta Country Club.

The Vikings had four golfers shoot rounds of 77 or better on Monday.

“That’s as good as we’ve shot all year. I was very proud of those guys,” Lowndes head coach James Brown said.

Cole Young had Lowndes’ best score of the day, a 74. Bryant Thagard shot a 75, Brent Fesler had a 76 and Tripp Talley carded a 77 for the Vikings. Clay Peters also played for the Vikings on Monday.

“They played much better today,” Brown said. “We’ve really played well all year for probably 15 or 16 holes out of the 18, but three or four holes we’d just not play well individually, and we wouldn’t score well. For some reason, today we were able to put it together. (A team score of) 302 is a real good score.”

Tift County finished second with a 314. Coffee was third with a 323, host Valdosta took fourth with a 343 and Lee County was fifth with a 346.

“We didn’t play as well as I’d hoped, but we’ve got some guys getting better. I can definitely see the scores dropping,” Valdosta head coach Justin Henderson said.

The individual winner was Luukas Alakulppi of Valdosta. Alakulppi shot a one-under-par 71 to claim the victory.

“I played pretty decent. I made a couple good ones down the stretch that helped me out,” Alakulppi said. “I birdied four of the last six (holes), and that helped a lot. It got me one clear of the low score that was set up already.”

Alakulppi continued his impressive start to the season. He has competed in four tournaments for Valdosta so far this season, and has won three of them.

“I feel like I’m playing great golf,” Alakulppi said. “It’s always a good feeling to keep (the first place trophy) in the hometown. ... It’s a great start. I’d like to keep it going.”

“He’s on fire,” Henderson said. “The best part about Luukas is his mental game. I couldn’t have (noticed) any difference when he was three over and when he was one under.”

Tyler Dallas, Alakulppi’s teammate at Valdosta, finished fifth in the tournament.

Lowndes’ junior varsity team came in sixth with a 348, just two shots behind the varsity team from Lee County. Logan Barker shot an 82, Jake Parris shot an 84, Logan Neeley had an 88 and Will Holt had a 94.

The tournament had nine teams competing.

“It went well,” Henderson said. “(I have to thank) the country club for letting us play out here.”

The tournament is named after William “Dynamite” Goodloe, who was a multi-sport star at Valdosta High School and later an assistant coach at Georgia Tech and an outstanding amateur golfer. He is a member of the Georgia Golf Hall of Fame.
