VALDOSTA —
On a week when every spring sports team from Lowndes and Valdosta will face one another, the Lowndes tennis teams built on the golf team’s victory from Monday and swept rival Valdosta on Tuesday afternoon.
Lowndes’ girls tennis team beat Valdosta 4-1, while the boys swept 5-0.
“It was a great region win, especially after a long tournament weekend,” Lowndes head coach Heath Phelps said. “We have to go back to work (today).”
The Vikings will host Thomas County Central today, in a rain makeup from earlier this season, before visiting Brunswick on Friday night in region play.
The majority of the matches were close, even if the scores didn’t indicate it at the end of the day. Players fought through some of the warmest weather of the season, and high humidity, on a day that began with heavy rain showers.
By time the matches began, the sun was out and Lowndes was able to prevail and beat its crosstown rival Valdosta.
On the girls’ side, Lowndes’ Taylor Vinge beat Valdosta’s Savannah Plumly 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 1 singles match, Alden Minick beat Valdosta’s Nadine Fares 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles, Emily Singletary beat Abbie Smith 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 3 singles match and the No. 1 doubles team of Lori and Laina Taylor beat Valdosta’s McClain Talley and Cali Swift 6-0, 6-3.
The only varsity loss for Lowndes on Tuesday came in the final match of the day, when the No. 2 doubles team of Haley Tubbs and Maggie Wisenbaker lost a close three-set match to Valdosta’s Aneesha Chowdhary and Krupa Dudani, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.
On the boys’ side, Lowndes’ Samuel Price beat Valdosta’s top player, Andrew Greneker, 6-1, 6-0. John Fuller won his No. 2 singles match over Eddie Taylor 6-3, 6-1 and Ben Burkhalter won 6-0, 6-0 over Valdosta’s Elliot Ingram at No. 3 singles.
In doubles play, Dylan Farmer and Trent Parker didn’t lose a game, beating Valdosta’s No. 1 doubles team of Houston Maples and Tristan Williams 6-0, 6-0. In the No. 2 doubles match, Lowndes’ Josh Fricker and Zack Ridge won 6-2, 6-2 over Valdosta’s Marcel Wehling and Jacob Rice.
The Lowndes and Valdosta track teams will meet today at Lowndes’ quad meet, set to begin at 4 p.m., weather permitting. The Lowndes and Valdosta varsity baseball teams will meet for a Region 1-6A doubleheader at Valdosta’s Bazemore Field on Friday at 4 p.m. The girls and boys soccer teams will meet Friday in games being played at Valdosta State University because Lowndes’ Martin Stadium is unavailable due to field replacement.
