VALDOSTA —
The fourth annual Titletown Tasting will be held tonight from 7-10:30 p.m. at Cotton Corner in Valdosta.
The proceeds for the annual event benefit the Special Olympics of Georgia, which provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.
There are 24,470 Special Olympic athletes in the country and over 300 within the greater Valdosta area.
All of the money from tonight’s event will go directly to the Special Olympics of Georgia.
“All this money directly benefits the athletes,” said event organizer Danny Knight. “The average cost to sponsor an athlete all year is $120 a year.”
The event will begin with hors d’oeuvres by Covington’s, and will also feature wine and beer, entertainment, a silent auction and a presentation by the Valdosta Special Olympic athletes.
Knight said there are five statewide Special Olympics competitions annually.
On Aug. 24-26, the Special Olympics of Georgia will be hosting an adult bowling competition and horse show in Perry.
Three of the biggest events of the season are the Fall Games in October, Winter Games in January and the Summer Games in May.
The events give the athletes with disabilities a chance to display their talents.
“A lot of these athletes, they look up to your high school star athletes,” said Knight. “So they are able to get into their shoes for once. They are able to go and compete and win medals.”
Tickets for the event are $30 per person or $55 per couple and can be purchased at the door of Cotton Corner, located at 101 N. Ashley Street in Downtown Valdosta.
