This week in local sports will be dominated by local camps being hosted by Valdosta State University and Lowndes High School.
On Monday, the VSU football team hosts its final day of its All Position/Team Camp, while the VSU softball, baseball and women’s basketball teams are each hosting camps.
The Blazer softball team is hosting its first of two instructional camps this summer. National champion head coach Thomas Macera, his staff and select players will instruct youth hitting, fielding and throwing techniques. The cost for the camp is $100 per camper, and begins this today and tomorrow at 9 a.m.-1 p.m.
The Valdosta State Lady Blazer basketball team and head coach Kiley Hill is hosting its Instructional Camp this week.
The camp begins today and runs through Thursday. Camp sessions runs from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. each day and the cost is $100.
The Lady Blazers will also host their Post Camp this Friday and Saturday. The camp is available for players 5-feet-9 and taller. The cost is $150 for those staying overnight and $125 for those commuting. The camp features a Friday session from 1-8:30 p.m. and Saturday from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.
The Blazer baseball team will continue its string of camps this week. This week, the team is hosting its Baseball School, a series of camps that focus on advanced hitting instruction.
The first session will be held today and tomorrow with the second session being held Wednesday and Thursday. The camp will feature two more sessions next week. The cost is $40 per camper. The camps will last for an hour and a half. Ages 7-9 will go from 8:30 a.m. until 10 a.m., while the 10-12 age group will go from 10:30 a.m. until noon.
The Lowndes varsity baseball team will holds a camp this week. The camp is available for ages 4 to 12 and the cost is $100 per camper.
The three-day camp, which begins Tuesday, will run from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. each day, and will focus on throwing, catching and hitting, while also having water slides and bounce houses the participants may enjoy at the end of the day. The proceeds from the camp go to help fund the new LHS Hitting Facility.

Prince Automotive donates new baseball equipment
Prince Automotive of Valdosta is supporting the Valdosta community through its partnership with the Valdosta/Lowndes County Recreation Department. The dealership has joined forces with the national Chevrolet Youth Baseball program to provide new equipment, instructional clinics, and a monetary donation.

Needmore holds final races before big Memorial Day weekend
Saturday night racing at Needmore Speedway saw some new faces in victory lane.

VSU softball wins South Region, headed to nationals
For the third time in four years, and second in a row, Valdosta State’s softball team will play in the national championship tournament.
The Blazers won their third South Region championship Saturday, beating Alabama-Huntsville 8-3 in game three of the best-of-three series at Steel’s Diamond at Blazer Park. -
VSU baseball season comes to an end
Delta State scored seven unanswered runs to defeat Valdosta State 7-2 in an elimination game of the NCAA South Region Tournament at the UT Baseball Field Saturday afternoon.
