VALDOSTA —
Luke List shot a 3-under par 69, while Woody Austin shot a course tying record 8-under 64 to share the third round lead of the South Georgia Classic at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club.
The two will play in the final pairing of today's final round, with a tee time of 1:05 p.m.
“It feels great, that is all you can ask for,” said List. “I was really happy with how I played today. (Woody) is great, he has quite the personality. I don’t know him too well, so I am looking forward to getting out and playing with him. He has had a great career on the PGA TOUR.”
Austin’s 64 followed up a second round 66 that came after a first round 74. A 3-time winner on the PGA TOUR, Austin, who is known for breaking a putter over his head during a PGA event in 2007, used an impressive back nine, in which he shot a tournament record 30, to go 12-under par.
After playing the front nine holes at 2-under par, he birdied Nos. 9, 14, 16 and 18 to go along with an eagle on the par-5 11th, which he used a long 25-foot putt to secure.
“It just goes to show that when you can putt like people do every day it is kind of fun,” said Austin of his back nine. “I haven’t done it in a long time, so it is nice. I don’t really know much besides I am trying to re-learn how to play golf and I am getting better. Today, I just made putts that I am not used to making.”
List managed to stay even par through the front nine holes, but fired a 3-under on the back nine, which was propelled by a birdie on the par-4 ninth and an eagle on the par-5 10th, which he secured with an 80 to 100-foot putt.
“It was tough on the front, I stayed even, but I felt like I played a lot better than that,” List said. “Normally, in the past, I would have gotten a little angry, but I hung in there today…I hit two great shots on 11, and made a bomb putt that was 100 feet or something, it was crazy. That was the key, I really hadn’t done much up until then.”
Now that Austin, who has missed the cut in all four of his PGA starts this season, seems to have found his stroke, his putting stoke especially, he finds himself in contention for his first win, on any tour, since 2007, when he won the St. Jude Championship.
“My golf game is not very solid, on a consistent basis,” said Austin. “It seems to be old man, slow start, but good finish…Obviously, the key is that you have to make putts. I mean I putted better the past two days than I have in the past 10 years, so if the putts go in, they go in, but if they don’t, it is going to be a struggle.”
Ben Briscoe and Will Mackenzie are tied for third place at 10-under par, after Briscoe managed 6-under 66 and MacKenzie a 3-under 69 on Saturday.
With many players still in contention — 13 players are within six strokes of the leaders — List admitted that he would be watching the leaderboards on Sunday to gage where he stands within the field, saying it is hard not to notice them.
“It is hard not to,” List said. “When those guys say they don’t notice the leaderboards, I kind of find that b.s. It is kind of hard not to, they are all over the past. I look at them, I mean I try not to think too much about them, but I am not going to lie about it.”
Round one leader Robert Streb had the hot clubs early in Saturday’s round. The Kansas State grad birdied six of his first 10 holes, to take the lead at 11-under par. But, his hot-streak came to an end as he recorded bogeys on the par-5 11th, par-3 14th and the par-4 15th to fall to 8-under par, where he is currently tied with Richard Scott and Brian Stuard, who shot an even par 72 on Saturday.
Andrew Buckle was in contention for the lead after shooting up the leaderboard with seven birdies through 17 holes, but a triple bogey on the par-4 18th cost him three strokes and sent him back to tied for 10th place at 6-under par. Regardless, Buckle finished his third round with four 2’s on his scorecard, after he posted birdies on four par 3’s.
