VALDOSTA — Lowndes High tennis opened up the 2012 season with a JV double-header in Waycross Wednesday afternoon. The Lowndes junior varsity girls’ and boys’ teams defeated Ware County and Camden County. The Lowndes girls beat Ware 4-0 and Camden 3-2. The boys also claimed a 4-0 over Ware and a 3-2 victory over Camden. Individual results include No. 1 singles Haley Tubbs won 8-0, No. 2 singles: Maggie Wisenbaker won 8-0, No. 1 doubles Taylor Grantham and Maggie Sterling won 8-0 and No. 2 doubles McCulley Cregger and Hannah Hornsby won 8-1versus Ware County. For the girls versus Camden County, Tubs won 8-5, Wisenbaker won 8-6 and No. 3 singles Tanner Gordon won 8-5. For the boys, No. 1 singles Reid Lindsey won 8-4, No. 2 singles Zack Ridge won 8-1 and No. 3 singles Ellis Griffin won 8-2 versus Ware County, while No.1 doubles Zach Blakley and Taylor Parker won 8-0. No. 2 doubles Colson Lee and Ryan Green won 8-1. Against Camden County, Ridge won 8-4 while Blakley and Griffin teams up to win 8-2, while Parker and Lee combined to win 8-0. The Lowndes JV tennis teams will travel to Jesup, GA on Saturday to play in the Wayne County Invitational. The varsity teams will open up their season next Thursday afternoon against Thomas County Central at the LHS courts.

Fans welcome home champion Blazers
Much like it had done all season, the local Valdosta community showed its support for the National Champion Valdosta State softball team Sunday.

The Valdosta State softball team faced all kinds of adversity throughout the national tournament. After losing to UC-San Diego in the first game of the tournament on Wednesday, the Blazers staved off four elimination games en route to an appearance in the Division II National Championship Game on Saturday afternoon.

Posey’s homer lifts VSU in 11th
To some, Samantha Posey is known as Buster’s sister. But on Thursday, Valdosta State softball fans were referring to Posey as the hero, after she delivered a walk-off home run in the 11th inning to carry the top-ranked Blazers past the Augustana (S.D) Vikings, 5-4.
