Lady Blazers improve to 4-0 with win over Albany State

VALDOSTA — Senior Brittney Nelson led the charge against Albany State with her third consecutive double-double to help Valdosta State beat the Golden Rams, 65-55.

Nelson finished with 20 points, 12 rebounds and three assists, but received plenty of help from her friends. The 65-55 win pushed VSU to 4-0 on the season and dropped Albany State to 0-1.

Nelson had almost reached her double-double in the first 20 minutes, finishing the first half with 10 points and seven rebounds.

She earned 12 of her points on three-pointers and did the rest of the hard work in the paint to help VSU score 24 points in the paint.

Kourtnee Williams almost double-doubled herself with 16 points and nine rebounds. She also gave three assists and did most of the defensive work on Albany State’s star, April Thomas. Williams did all that while playing more than 39 minutes of the 40-minute game.

Freshman Courtney Sprague and sophomore Brooke Satterfield also finished in double figures with 12 and 10 points respectively while combining for eight boards.

Point guard Kamyia Smith added six assists and three steals in the game while Sprague finished with four thefts of her own.

Valdosta State’s starting five did most of the heavy lifting for the Lady Blazers, playing all but 18 minutes of the game. Of the four starters outside of Sprague, none logged less than 38 minutes.

Valdosta State didn’t seem to tire though as the Lady Blazers pushed their nine-point halftime lead all the way up to 16 points in the second half.

The Lady Blazers forced 22 turnovers on 12 steals and scored 20 points off them. The red and black added 13 points on the break.

While Nelson and Williams crashed the boards for 21 combined rebounds, the rest of the squad chipped in to help VSU finish with 46 boards to 37 for Albany State.

The Lady Blazers turned that into 15 second chance points to just five for the Golden Rams.

VSU visits Union Nov. 27.
