VALDOSTA —
Valdosta State is proud to announce the first duo of Steel’s Jewelry VSU Student-Athletes of the Week.
Football’s Graham Craig took the reins of the Blazer offense in the second half against Saginaw Valley and led two scoring drives to snag a late lead.
Meanwhile, Juliana Boehm led the women’s cross country team with an individual title at the University of Tampa Early Bird Classic.
Craig, a sophomore transfer from Murray State, performed well in his first game at Valdosta State.
The Blazers might have been in dire straits if it weren’t for Craig’s play. In relief of an injured Cayden Cochran, Craig was both accurate and dangerous.
He finished the game 12 of 19 passing for a 63.2 completion percentage. He racked up 183 yards throwing with the bulk of it coming on a 70-yard touchdown to Seantavious Jones.
Craig’s efficiency placed him 30th in the nation in passing efficiency after just one half of play. He is expected to start this week in VSU’s home opener against Fort Valley State at 7 p.m. at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium.
Boehm became the first Blazer or Lady Blazer to finish atop a meet in quite some time. Boehm, who started her career at Valdosta State as a tennis player, finished with a time of 19:24.
Boehm, planning to do double duty this year for both cross country and tennis, beat the nearest collegiate competitor by five seconds despite actually falling in the middle of the race. She was not deterred by the mid race fall and continued to pace the group of runners.
With Boehm’s first place finish, she lifted the women’s cross country team to a fifth place finish of 13 teams.
The team’s next competition will be in Americus at 8:30 a.m. Saturday in the Georgia Southwestern Rememberance Run.
