VALDOSTA —
The honors keep rolling in for Valdosta State senior forward Tyrone Curnell.
On Thursday, Curnell was voted as the South Region player of the year by college sports information directors.
It is the second straight year he has been named to the All-Region first team.
The Ocoee, Fla. native is averaging 17.7 points and 8.6 rebounds per game. He leads the Blazers in both categories.
Curnell is 31 points shy of 1,000 for his VSU career. He reached 500 rebounds for his VSU career on Saturday against Arkansas Tech.
Last week, Curnell was named the Gulf South Conference East Division player of the year. He was also first team All-GSC last season. He has won GSC East player of the week honors eight times in two seasons.
Curnell’s selection as the South Region player of the year makes him a likely candidate to repeat as an All-American. The National Association of Basketball Coaches selected him as an All-American last year.
The South Region is made up up the Gulf South Conference, Sunshine State Conference and Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
