VALDOSTA — Blazer golf leads after first round
VALDOSTA, Ga. – Valdosta State shot a three-over 291 to tie for first during the first round of the First Federal Southeastern Collegiate at the par-72, 7,097 yard Kinderlou Forest Golf Club Sunday.
The Blazers matched Florida Southern for the top spot on the day as the two squads bested Barry by four strokes. Lander was two strokes behind the Bucs in fourth place while Armstrong Atlantic shot an 11-over 299 to finish the day fifth. North Alabama and West Georgia tied for sixth at 300 followed by Georgia College and West Florida at 301.
Lynn was 10th with a 306 followed by Nova Southeastern a stroke behind and Florida Tech one more shot behind. Columbus State and Carson-Newman tied for 13th at 309 and Delta State shot a 314 to finish the day 15th while Clayton State (317), Rollins (318) and Eckered (322) rounded out the field.
Four players shot a one-under 71 to finish tied for first on the day, including Blazer Chad Smith. Wade Holland tied for fifth with an even par 72 while Chesley Gunn was a stroke behind and tied for eighth. Will Repko shot a three-over 75 to tie for 24th while Fredrick Hildebrand rounded out the VSU squad with a nine-over 81 to tie for 77th.
The Blazers also had four individuals compete on the day, led by Evan Hanna, who shot a 73 to tie for eighth. Clarke Hendrick was four-over-par with a 76 to tie for 36th while Drew McGuire tied for 87th with an 83 and Jason Groover tied for 93rd with an 85.
The tournament continues with a single round of play on Monday before finishing up with a single round on Tuesday.
Lady Blazers fall to Alabama-Huntsville
HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – No. 3 Valdosta State squared off against No. 11 Alabama-Huntsville Sunday. Despite the higher ranking, the Lady Blazers could not get past the Lady Chargers, falling 1-0 and 4-5.
Alyssa Shirey was three of four with a run batted in for the second game while her senior counterpart, Stephanie Carlson, was one of three with two RBIs.
Morgan Johnson was one of two in the second game while Amy Brightwell was one of three with an RBI and a run scored. Amber Shaw and Marti Littlefield (two) combined for three runs scored in the game.
Margaret Carter gave up seven hit and four earned runs, but tallied seven strikeouts in just over six innings of play. Meanwhile, Holly Satterfield only gave up three hits and one earned run in six innings. She notched five strikeouts.
Only Brightwell, Shaw and Littlefield were able to notch hits in the first game, but none resulted in wins.
Valdosta State will look to bounce back against West Georgia at 1 p.m. Monday.
VSU tennis on a roll
PENSACOLA, Fla. – Valdosta State tennis continues to roll. After wins at West Alabama, both the men and women picked up their second Gulf South Conference win in a row with victories over Alabama-Huntsville.
The men swept the Chargers while the women almost did it, 8-1. After Alabama-Huntsville came Ouachita Baptist for the Blazers.
Valdosta State cruised to a 7-2 win over GSC West foe Ouachita Baptist. The Blazers swept doubles and won the top three singles slots as well as in the sixth slot.
The Lady Blazers’ match against Northeast Oklahoma was cancelled, but VSU will be back in action Thursday, March 25, against North Alabama in Niceville, Fla.
The Blazers can next be seen against Drury in Valdosta Wednesday, March 24, at 2 p.m.

VSU teams hosting summer camps
The national champion Valdosta State softball team will host two separate summer camps this summer, as well as weekly clinics throughout the summer.
The two summer camps will be held on June 11-13 and July 9-11 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The camps will cost $100 each. -
David Dean Youth Camp begins next week
The David Dean Youth Football Camp is quickly approaching.
The fourth annual camp will be held May 29-June 1 at the Athletic Fieldhouse off Mary Street. -
National champion head coach rewarded with new truck
National champion head coach rewarded with new truck Valdosta State head softball coach Thomas Macera was rewarded with a new Toyota Tacoma from Valdosta Toyota on Wednesday for his team’s 4-1 victory over the University of California-San Diego in the Division II Softball National Championship Game.

Two Valwood boys’ soccer players have been named to the GISA Class AA All-State team.

Go ahead and add another award to resume of this year’s Valdosta State softball team.
Between conference player of the week awards, a national player of the week award, All-Conference and All-Region honors and four All-American awards, the national champion Blazers had plenty of individuals honored for performances throughout the season, which ultimately led to VSU’s first ever softball national title. -

Monday, May 28, there will be a Memorial Day 5K, which will begin at 8 a.m. from the VECA School located on the corner of Azalea Drive and College Street. -
Tech bound
Donjahae Jones gets it done in the classroom and on the track.
