VALDOSTA —
Ware County won the 2011 Wildcat Invitational on Saturday at Valdosta High School.
The Gators earned 204.5 points, 31 more than second place Lowndes, and had two individual champions. Ware had 11 wrestlers place in the top six in their weight class.
Lowndes finished second, earning 173 points. The Vikings had two individual champions, and eight Vikings placed in the top three.
Wakulla placed third with 140 points, followed by Tift County (137 points), Blessed Trinity (123.5), Coffee (108) and Columbia (107). Host Valdosta finished eighth with 102 points. Cook took ninth with 87 points, followed by Florida High (73), South Walton (65), Irwin County (63.5), Berrien (39.5), Colquitt County (32) and Southeast Bulloch (29.5).
Lowndes’ Jay Durden won the 138 pound weight class, defeating Tift’s Adrian Martin in the final. Mark Stubbs was the 160 pound champion, beating Blessed Trinity’s Andrew O’Brien in the final.
Lowndes’ Chase Miley (126 pounds) and Stacey Wright (285) placed second. Chad Maldonado (120), Jake Croft (132), Brian Bell (170) and Brandon Bell (182) all finished third.
Valdosta’s Marshawn Sharp dominated the 126 pound weight class. He pinned his first two opponents, then in the finals, he defeated Miley 22-11. Sharp’s twin brother Darshawn was also dominant in the 113 pound weight class, winning his first two matches with a technical fall and a pin, then defeating Zach Malik of Wakulla with a technical fall in the finals.
Valdosta’s Kris Brown placed second in the 170 pound weight class. Teammate Marcus Norman took fifth at 120 pounds, and Willie McClain placed sixth at 220 pounds.
Cook’s Destry Walker won the 285 pound weight class, pinning his first three opponents then winning a decision in the finals. Tony Jackson was third at 113 pounds. Justin Hayes (182) took fourth, and Arturo Perez (145) and Raheem Coxfield (160) both took fifth.
Berrien’s Hunter Kelly finished third in the 106 pound class and Kenneth Puryear was sixth at 195 pounds.
Cole Schreiber of Columbia took first at 106 pounds. Bill Morgan of Wakulla won the 120 pound weight class. Kevon White of Wakulla won the 132 pound class. Chris Solar of Blessed Trinity took first at 145 pounds.
Ware’s Shawn Tinnyhill was the 152 pound champion, and teammate David Shavers finished first at 170 pounds. Southeast Bulloch’s Hunter Ferguson was the 182 pound champion. Monterance Allen of Columbia was first at 195 pounds. Colquitt’s Travis Register was the 220 pound champion.

VSU teams hosting summer camps
The national champion Valdosta State softball team will host two separate summer camps this summer, as well as weekly clinics throughout the summer.
The two summer camps will be held on June 11-13 and July 9-11 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The camps will cost $100 each. -
David Dean Youth Camp begins next week
The David Dean Youth Football Camp is quickly approaching.
The fourth annual camp will be held May 29-June 1 at the Athletic Fieldhouse off Mary Street. -
National champion head coach rewarded with new truck

Go ahead and add another award to resume of this year’s Valdosta State softball team.
Between conference player of the week awards, a national player of the week award, All-Conference and All-Region honors and four All-American awards, the national champion Blazers had plenty of individuals honored for performances throughout the season, which ultimately led to VSU’s first ever softball national title. -

Wildcats close spring practice
VALDOSTA — The Valdosta Wildcats put their finishing touches on spring practice Saturday night with the playing of their annual spring game at Bazemore-Hyder Stadium.
