VALDOSTA —
Lowndes High football coach Randy McPherson couldn’t help but smile Thursday night while running around the field at Martin Stadium.
McPherson’s smile and intensity were contagious as his team worked through its second day in full pads. The Vikings practiced for over two hours Thursday night, which included a full-contact scrimmage.
Lowndes started full-contact drills Wednesday with a pair of practices.
“We had a good day (Wednesday),” McPherson said. “It was pretty physical. They did good.”
McPherson said the defense was far-ahead of the offense through the start of fall practice.
“Defense is way ahead of the offense, but that is a good thing,” McPherson said.
“We just have to continue to get better on both sides of the ball.”
As for the on-going quarterback battle between senior Alex Stephenson and junior Seth Carlo, the two will continue to battle it out and a starter will likely not be named until the week of the season opener.
At Thursday night’s practice, Stephenson was in full pads and running with the No. 1 offense. Carlo was seen in shorts and a t-shirt with his left hand heavily taped, much like it has been for several weeks since suffering the injury during a non-football related accident in July.
With the new heat rules, the Vikings were not eligible to hold two practices on Thursday, but they will hold two practices today at Lowndes High School. The Vikings will then be eligible for another two-a-day on Sunday and then again on Tuesday.
Classes in the Lowndes County School System resume Wednesday. At that time, the Vikings will then move to one practice a day. Lowndes will also hold its annual picture day on Wednesday.
The Vikings scrimmage Thomasville Aug. 17 and open the regular season Aug. 31 against Luella at Martin Stadium. Both games are scheduled for an 8 p.m. kickoff.
