VALDOSTA —
Supporters of the Lowndes Vikings played 36 holes of golf at Kinderlou Forest Golf Club, and helped raise money for the Lowndes football team.
The 2012 Plowboy Open Golf Tournament took place Friday and Saturday at Kinderlou Forest. There were 35 teams competing. The proceeds from the tournament will go to the Vikings’ football program.
“It was another good year,” tournament organizer Brett Whiddon said. “It seems to be getting better and better every year. The turnout was good. We’ve got a lot of sponsors that helped us with raising money; that’s huge in making this a success. ... A big thanks to the sponsors that donated money to help the cause.
“We’ll give that money to the football team, and let them use it however they need to use it.”
It took 38 holes to determine the winner of the first flight. Jeff Sikes and Steve Everett won their flight on the second hole of a playoff with Keith Martin and John Romine. Both teams had shot a 129.
It also took a playoff to determine the third- and fourth-place finishers in the first flight. Lowndes head football coach Randy McPherson and his partner, Billy Smith, earned third place, while Scott Dyess, a longtime middle school football coach in the Lowndes system, and Frank Sousa finished fourth. Those teams had shot a 130.
Randy Hill and Danny Redshaw won flight 2 convincingly, shooting a 60 on Saturday after carding a 59 on Friday. Their score of 119 won the flight by six strokes and was the lowest score of the tournament in any flight. Redshaw is the Vikings’ wide receivers coach (and also the head baseball coach), while Hill was a longtime assistant coach at Lowndes.
Tony Hicks and Gary Prine finished second at 125. Hicks and Prine won a playoff with Bowen Corbett and Lucas Dukes. Buck Cargile and Michael Greenhow were fourth with a 128.
Andy Tabor and Larry Tabor won the third flight by eight strokes, shooting a 123. The Tabors shot a 60 on Saturday. Rick Parsons and Josh Pridgen were second with a 131. Scott Jernigan and Carter Johns took third with a 133, and defeated J.D. Yeager and Clint Joyner in a playoff.
The members of the winning teams in each flight received a set of irons. The second-place teams got new drivers. The third-place teams received new putters, and the fourth-place teams received golf bags.
