Rough season continues for Blazer basketball

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Scott Dennis scored 24 points to lead No. 10 Christian Brothers to a 62-50 victory over visiting Valdosta State in Gulf South Conference men's basketball action at Canale Arena Saturday evening.

With the victory, the Buccaneers improve to 17-3 on the season and 8-1 in GSC play while VSU falls to 9-11 and 2-7 in league action.

Dennis scored nine of Christian Brothers' first 13 points of the game en route to 15 first half points. He added nine more in the second half while hitting 10-of-15 field goal attempts in the contest. He also pulled down 11 rebounds and dished out two assists while playing all 40 minutes of the ball game.

Valdosta State jumped out to an early lead as the Blazers built a 10-5 advantage a little over five minutes into the contest.

CBU fought back to take the lead five minutes later and eventually led by six points with a minute to play, only to have VSU's Sidney Harris hit a pair of three pointers in the final 47 seconds to close the Blazers to within 29-27 at the half.

The first seven minutes of the second half saw three ties and as many lead changes before the Bucs used a 9-0 run to grab the lead for good. Pat Graham handled all the scoring himself as he hit three three-pointers to post CBU to a 47-40 advantage with 9:37 remaining in the contest.

Valdosta State got no closer than three points the rest of the game while Christian Brothers hit five of six free throws in the final minute of play to wrap up the victory.

Sidney Harris led Valdosta State with 13 points while Josh Sparks added 12.

The Blazers shot just 35.1 percent from the field in the contest as they hit just 20-of-57 field goal attempts .

Zach Warner and Graham also scored in double figures, with 15 and 12, respectively, to join Dennis in double figures for the Bucs, who shot 41.7 percent from the floor while hitting 20-of-48 field goals.
